Bella Thorne’s Guide to Acne-Prone Skin Care and Glitter Eyes

“I don’t like the whole perfection look,” says Bella Thorne matter-of-factly. “That just never works for me.” Each day, the 21-year-old actress, beauty entrepreneur, and author of forthcoming book The Life of a Wannabe Mogul: Mental Disarray , offers her 20-million Instagram followers an unfiltered view of her life. And on this early June morning during Pride Month in New York City, she’s taking Vogue even further into her world, through the lens of her beauty routine.

“My skin has been a long time in the works,” explains Thorne with a stack of metallic necklaces peaking out from underneath her emerald green Olivia von Halle pajama top. “I don’t even know how many years I’ve had cystic acne, but it started off as dermatitis, and then I tried everything you can think of.” After going down the list of all the skin treatments she’s test-driven to curb her breakouts (Lasers! Microneedling! Vampire facials!), she reveals that skipping washing her face in the morning is a vital part of the equation. “There’s something called overwashing your face, and when I had really bad acne, that was one of the things I stopped, and it actually helped my skin,” she says while layering on Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer for a sheer, featherweight veil of coverage. “Not that I’m saying, ‘You don’t have to wash your face in the morning,’ it’s just something that works for me.”

Another thing that really works for Thorne? Kryolan’s Dermacolor Camouflage Creme, which she “dots and pats” on her post-inflammatory dark spots. “It’s known mostly for scar victims,” says Thorne of the cult concealer. “I know it sounds crazy, but it doesn’t break out my skin.” Moving onto her eyes, Thorne has some tricks for making her brown gaze pop. First, she layers a brightening golden ivory shadow on the lids “to prevent creasing,” then traces Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in bright teal Deep End, flicking it on the inner and outer corners of the eyes while leaving negative space in between. “When you go into the middle, it closes off your eyes and makes [them] look smaller,” she insists. Taking her graphic liner to the next level, she glides Stila’s Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in glittery Perlina along the upper lash lines. After lamenting the fact that she has to use Nars’s regular Orgasm Blush instead of the Super Orgasm edition to sculpt her cheeks (“Who just wants an orgasm? I want a super orgasm!” she says), she moves onto her final step: a fierce swipe of lipstick. Whipping out Pat McGrath Labs’s MatteTrance Lipstick in orange-red Obsessed! 211, she runs the bullet along her pillowy pout, then finesses it around the edges. “I only ever do the top part of my lip with my finger and I let my [Cupid’s] bow do the work,” she explains.

Working a plethora of angles while posing in the mirror, Thorne admires her reflection. “Hi, how are you?” she poses. “You want to take me on a date? No, I’m just kidding. I just got a boyfriend. But if you’re a girl, what’s up? Hit me up!” Thanking the audience for putting up with her “ridiculous” antics, she ends on a characteristically irreverent note: “Tune into the next Vogue video—[though] I’m sure it won’t be half as fun as mine!”
