Belleville’s Art on the Square is where to find that ‘perfect piece’ to complete a room

That spot. You know that spot. The place on the wall or that thing you need on the table to complete the room or add the right pop. Isn’t it a great feeling when you figure it out? Every time you walk by it catches your eye and brings that feeling of … ahhhh. If you are looking for something to fill that spot, look no further than Art on the Square.

This year’s show will feature a wide variety of paintings, drawings and photography in all colors to fill that spot on the wall. Or, if you need a table or shelf piece, try one of the sculpture, glass or pottery artists. Maybe your need is an outdoor piece. Many a garden have been enhanced with sculptures. Try a kinetic one, and you’ll have a conversation piece.

Local businesses have looked to Art on the Square to fill that spot for years. Mathis, Marifian & Richter, Ltd., a local law firm located on the Square, purchased numerous pieces from Art on the Square to fill that spot. Managing partner Pat Mathis noted that when the firm moved to their offices at 23 Public Square in 2004, there were many blank walls to cover. Art on the Square became their source for art. Each year the firm added additional pieces to create a beautiful office space popping with color and character. They have also sponsored the High School Sculpture project to fill that spot at local high schools.

Jon Rosenstengel, of Bonifield & Rosenstengel, a law firm located steps from the Square, loves cars. He found an interesting piece featuring a cartoon car image for his office. At home, Jon and his wife, the Honorable Nancy Rosenstengel, were looking for that perfect piece for above the fireplace. After looking at several paintings, they came upon oil painter Tom Anderson at Art on the Square.

They weren’t sure which piece would look best, so the artist brought several pieces to their home to try on the wall. Ultimately, the piece they chose was one they had originally not considered. The artist rotated the piece from horizontal to vertical. The Rosenstengels’ children helped the artist whiteout his name so he could sign it at the bottom of the newly hung painting. It was a great collaboration of artist, space and buyer. Judge Rosenstengel liked Tom’s work so much that she chose another one of his pieces for her chambers.

Two other art collectors, Ann and Nikki, recently remodeled their living room and chose a neutral palette of colors. They needed something bright for their coffee table. They traveled from their home in Nashville, Tennessee, to Art on the Square to fill that spot. Luckily for them, wood artist Luis Gonzales from Miami, Florida, was at the show with several bright colored pieces of fruit.

They purchased a bright-colored peach sculpture that set off the room. Each morning when Ann walks in the room, it brings a sense of light and happiness to her. It also brings a sense of completion for the room. Although they had not planned it, they also purchased an Andrew Carson sculpture for their backyard. Nikki says the kinetic glass draws your eye and is a great conversation piece for their garden.

Tom and Diana Barnett have been involved with Art on the Square for years, so it is natural for them to turn to the show when they need that special piece. For instance, they purchased several pieces in the past from Nolan Prohaska, who will be at the show this year. They even called Nolan to request a special flower piece to fit an area of their home.

When they needed to find a piece for that spot in the kitchen, they chose a painting from Marion Steen to complete the space. They also filled their home with many other sculptures, paintings and glass pieces from the show. Tom and Diana look to Art on the Square because of the immense variety of art forms available. Tom is also quick to point out the unique jewelry that Diana has found at the show as well.

So, if you have that “spot” where you are looking for the perfect piece, look no further than Art on the Square. Bring a photo of the space and let one of the artists help you. This year’s show features 102 artists, so surely you’ll be able to find something special. Happy shopping!
