Belleville principal announced as next superintendent at Freeburg High School

Freeburg Community High School District 77 announced its next superintendent Thursday.

Sarah Gass, who holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from McKendree University and currently serves as principal at Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville, will start July 1, 2024, according to a press release from Board President Victoria Staub.

She will replace Greg Frerking, who is retiring June 30 after serving as superintendent for the last seven years and working at the high school since 1992.

Gass started her career as a math teacher at O’Fallon High School before becoming principal at Chester High School and then assistant principal of curriculum and instruction at Quincy High School prior to joining Althoff as principal.

Gass holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, master’s degree in education from McKendree University, specialist’s degree in educational administration from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the doctorate from McKendree.

She also completed the National Institute for School Leadership’s Executive Development program and received her superintendent licensure at McKendree.

The school board will officially approve Gass’ employment at its December 14 board meeting.
