New Bellingham brewery opens Friday, offering family friendly atmosphere, pizza and lagers

Bellingham’s newest brewery is officially opening Friday, Aug. 4, with a lineup of housemade lagers, pizzas and appetizers for customers to enjoy.

Larrabee Lager Company was started by husband and wife duo Sam and Kate Milne, who have strived to start their own brewery for years.

“This has been a dream for 10 years. We moved to Bellingham in 2013 to start a brewery, but we were nowhere near ready or even knew where to begin. That is when Sam got a job at Kulshan washing kegs so he could learn about the inner workings of a brewery.

“After the hard work Sam had put in in the brewery industry the past 10 years, we knew we could finally take the leap and open our own,” Kate Milne wrote in an email to The Bellingham Herald.

The new brewery aims to serve a part of Bellingham that doesn’t have as many breweries.

“We are the only brewery on the north side of Bellingham that is vastly underserved when it comes to breweries, bars and restaurants. We are so excited to be able to bring this establishment to the northside,” Kate Milne wrote.

“We are very family friendly. We have an area located in the northeast corner of the taproom designated to kids that includes a kid’s table, legos, cars, trucks, coloring supplies, puzzles and more. Being parents ourselves, we know kids don’t love going to breweries and sitting there watching their parents drink a beer. Because of that, we wanted to make a space where the kids could have a great time too,” Kate Milne wrote.

The brewery is lager focused, although they also brew some IPAs, and also serve other local ciders and wines. Visitors can enjoy eight house brewed beers: Helles, Pilsner, Kolsch, Dunkel, Amber Lager, Gose, Cold IPA and a Hefeweizen.

Guests who want a nonalcoholic drink can also enjoy soda, sparkling water, iced tea, gluten-free and non alcoholic beer, IZZE sparkling juice, lemonade, apple juice and kombucha.

The onsite kitchen offers a simple menu of three appetizers, three salads and six pizzas for guests to enjoy with their drinks.

The menu includes a giant Bavarian pretzel, a meat and cheese snack plate, Spanish peanuts, salads, and various pizzas from classic cheese or pepperoni to a Margherita recipe, Mediterranean, spicy sausage and super pepperoni pizza topped with housemade red sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, pineapple and pickled jalapenos.

“Our communal-style beer hall and outdoor beer garden, inspired by traditional European brewing cultures, encourages laughter, thoughtful discussion, and newfound friendships. As leaders in our community and the brewing industry, our goal is to create long-lasting relationships, accountability, and viable community growth,” the brewery’s website states.
