Belmont Abbey graduates 144th class
THE CEREMONY: 11 a.m. Saturday at Belmont Abbey College’s Mary Help of Christians Basilica Piazza
NUMBER OF GRADUATES: More than 500 students earned bachelor’s degrees, including December graduates
THE WEATHER: mid 80s and sunny
ABBEY TRADITIONAL STUDENT OF THE YEAR: Maddie Kortsch is from Clover, South Carolina, and was a track and field athlete during her time at college.
ADRIAN AWARD WINNER for TEACHING EXCELLENCE: Heather Ayala, chair and associate professor, biology and biochemistry.
HER REMARKS: "I have been trained here to use my mind well, not solely for the sake of directing this knowledge to an end but for having knowledge as in itself."
ABBEY GRADUATE STUDENT OF THE YEAR: Timothy Gable of Asheville, currently lives in Gainesville, Florida, where he accepted a position as an account manager at Smith & Nephew, a global medical technology company. Gable is a veteran of the U.S. Marines, working as an infantry assault man and served in the 2nd Battalion 5th Marines at Camp Pendleton in California. He completed a tour in Iraq at operation Iraqi Freedom where he received a combat action award and a presidential unit citation award before being medically discharged after four years of service.
