Former Hollywood couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner split in 2015 after marrying 10 years earlier in 2005. Their divorce was finalised in 2018.

Opening up about the breakdown of his marriage in a new interview, the actor revealed it has been his "biggest regret".

Since splitting, the pair have remained on amicable terms as they co-parent their children - Violet, 14, Seraphina, 11, and seven-year-old Samuel.

Speaking to The New York Times, the Oscar winner shared: "The biggest regret of my life is this divorce. Shame is really toxic. There is no positive byproduct of shame. It's just stewing in a toxic, hideous feeling of low self-worth and self-loathing."

In the interview, Ben also spoke about his alcohol addiction, which he has been open about over the years.

"I drank relatively normally for a long time. What happened was that I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart. This was 2015, 2016. My drinking, of course, created more marital problems," he said. "I wish it didn't happen. I really wish it wasn't on the internet for my kids to see. Jen and I did our best to address it and be honest."

Despite reflecting on the past, he said he doesn't want to dwell on it. "It’s not particularly healthy for me to obsess over the failures - the relapses - and beat myself up," he said. "I have certainly made mistakes.

"I have certainly done things that I regret. But you’ve got to pick yourself up, learn from it, learn some more, try to move forward."

Jennifer filed for divorce in April 2017 and it was finalised in August 2018.
