Ben and Erin Napier Tell What It Was Like to Be Their Own Clients

When Ben and Erin Napier did their first two houses, they had limitations. “We were broke, and we only knew so much,” Ben tells House Beautiful. Now, they’ve gone from mainly referencing magazine clippings to possessing a heap of industry knowledge while navigating the renovation of their own new country home near Laurel, Mississippi. “It was stressful because now we know so much more about what's out there," laughs Ben.

“We know too much about what's possible,” Erin adds. “I didn't sleep at all for like two months before we finally finished. I would wake up in the middle of the night worrying about it.”

The Napiers take viewers through the whole process in the season six premiere of their show Home Town, which airs on December 4 at 8 p.m. ET on HGTV and will be available to stream on discovery+. With help from their close friends, the Napiers transform their new place into a classic English country house where they can slow down, watch their children play, and make lasting memories.

After renovating the houses of so many other homeowners, the Napiers found that it was easier to make decisions for other people’s homes than it was for their own. “If our homeowner doesn't have an opinion about their switch plates, then it's easy to choose a switch plate,” Erin says. But as their own clients, they have an opinion on everything. “There were just so many options, and I never knew if I was making the right choice,” she adds.

While knowing too much can sometimes be a curse, it certainly has its benefits. “We've made so many more connections now,” Ben says. “Like we have a connection to a rock quarry in South America where we can get slabs of marble.”

During their home renovation, you can expect to see inspiring wallpaper (fit for any budding wallpaper girl), custom-made wood furniture pieces, a kitchen reconfiguration, and a few surprises. With each decision, Erin says they ultimately had to ask themselves: “What do we really love? We love all of it, but what do we really, really love?”

Once you've seen the premiere (and as you wait for new episodes to drop!) make sure to catch the Napiers' pivot to scripted acting in the new holiday movie A Christmas Open House, which is now streaming on discovery+.
