Benches leave lasting memorials in Superior

Aug. 26—SUPERIOR — Through its Tribute Tree program, the city of Superior has planted more than 800 trees over the years, lasting gifts honoring individuals and organizations. A new opportunity is now available involving park benches.

"This program is a wonderful way for people to show their support or honor a loved one while simultaneously adding appeal and a place of comfort for a wide variety and number of visitors to the park and other public spaces," said Linda Cadotte, director of parks, recreation and forestry.

The first three benches were dedicated by city officials Aug. 19. They include a bench in memory of Jean Kioski located at the Humane Society of Douglas County, a bench in Gouge Park in memory of Terry and Elaine De Vinck and a bench at Center City Park

in memory of Kaye Tenerelli.

Tenerelli led the Superior Business Improvement District for 23 years. Jodi Rochon, who served as her administrative assistant for two decades, said she struggled to find a memorial for Tenerelli that was the right fit.

"I felt like nothing we could say or do would be able to express the love and appreciation we had for everything she did," Rochon said. "We wanted to celebrate Kaye because she touched all of our lives in various ways."

The bench sponsorship program was the perfect fit.

"Kaye had a longstanding love for reading so finding a spot on the library grounds was the perfect location. Kaye was a strong supporter of the library and served on their board for years," Rochon said. "Having the bench placed in front of the library and in a spot that overlooks the main intersection of the district that she helped build and grow was perfect. I presented the opportunity to the SBID Board of Directors in 2021 and they approved."

A group of close friends, "Kaye's Divas" gathered at the dedication to sit together on her bench.

"We all miss her so much and feel blessed to have had her in our lives. For me, 'Mrs. T' will always be with me. She was not only my boss but my friend, mentor and she was like family," Rochon said.

Applications for bench sponsorships must be submitted by Dec. 1 in order to be placed the following summer, June through August. To sponsor a bench, applicants must fill out the
