Benevolence Market offers chance to help Athens nonprofits during holiday season

The 29th annual Holiday Benevolence Market is planned for noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at Covenant Presbyterian Church at 1065 Gaines School Rd.

The market provides a way for people during the holidays to provide a monetary gift to 30 nonprofit groups in Athens.

Representatives from those organizations will attend the market, which gives shoppers a chance to purchase a symbolic gift in the name of a loved one and friends.

“Rather than writing multiple checks to organizations, the Benevolence Market provides a way to give monetary donations to several organizations while making a single payment,” according to a statement from the market.

The longevity of the market “is a testament to the extravagant generosity of the people of Athens and their commitment to the success of our outstanding local nonprofit organizations,” said Rev. Amy Baer, one of those organizing the market.

“The holidays can sometimes become too focused on consumerism, but the market provides an opportunity for people to give meaningful gifts that make a direct and lasting impact on our community,” she said.

The congregations supporting this year’s market are from First Presbyterian Church, Friendship Presbyterian Church, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, First Baptist Church of Athens, Athens Religious Society of Friends (Quaker), Athens Georgia Seventh-day Adventist Church, First Christian Church of Athens, Tuckston United Methodist Church, St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church, Oconee Street United Methodist Church, and Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Those unable to attend may purchase the symbolic gift online through Dec. 31 by going to https://forms.gle/mNj14CPFVsHFQL3J6.
