ONAWAY – A game-high 17 points from senior Aubrey Benson led the way for the Onaway girls basketball team, which won a third straight game by capturing a 60-36 home victory over Central Lake on Wednesday.

Senior Madilyn Crull and sophomore Charlotte Box each finished with 14 points to help the Lady Cardinals (11-3, 9-2 Ski Valley), who are currently alone in second place in their conference following the win.

“We played pretty well in this one,” said Onaway coach John George. “Aubrey (Benson) gave us a spark underneath, which was a nice addition that we haven’t had much success with this season. We hope we can continue to score inside. The story was defense. I thought our defense was very effective with everyone across the board contributing. Our defense caused multiple turnovers, which in turn led to scoring opportunities in transition.”

The Cardinals got off to a positive start, outscoring the Trojans by a 17-7 margin in the first quarter, then built their lead to 30-16 by halftime. After a dominant third quarter, the Cardinals were in complete command with a 49-24 advantage.

Kailyn George scored six points for the Cardinals, who received two points apiece from Sydney Peel, Jayma Domke, Marley Szymoniak and Ema DeMaestri. Andrew Ruppert had one.

Onaway will seek a fourth straight victory when it hosts Johannesburg-Lewiston (11-4, 7-3) in a Ski Valley clash on Friday.
