Bentley University accepting cryptocurrency to pay tuition

Bentley University is now accepting tuition payments in the form of cryptocurrency.

Bentley is partnering with the crypto exchange Coinbase to accept Bitcoin, Ethereum and the stablecoin USD Coin. It will also take gifts and donations in those three cryptocurrencies.

The Waltham-based university says it is one of the only universities in the country offering students this option.

“Bentley University is at the forefront in preparing business leaders with the skills and knowledge to succeed in the changing world economy,” Bentley President E. LaBrent Chrite said in a statement. “We’re proud to embrace this technology that our students are learning about, which will soon transform the global business landscape they’re about to enter.”

Bentley student Alex Kim started investing in Bitcoin in high school and launched the Bentley Blockchain Association last fall. The group, which the university touts as one of the few student-led blockchain groups in the nation, has grown to 257 members since its inception.

Kim says college students are interested in learning about “blockchain, decentralized finance and cryptocurrency investments.”

“These technologies are influencing the industries where they will be working,” he said in a statement on the Bentley University website.

According to the Pew Research Center, 16 percent of adults in the United States say they have invested in, traded or used cryptocurrency, and 86 percent say they have at least heard of it.

Bentley University’s financial services website currently lists cryptocurrency as a payment option.
