Berclair church provides free groceries to help combat food insecurity

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Food insecurity continues to plague many communities across the Memphis area. That’s why one church is making it their mission to ensure that hundreds of families have access to fresh, free food.

A line of cars was wrapped around Believing Church on Summer Avenue, where church members and volunteers spent Saturday morning passing out free groceries to those in their community.

In partnership with the Mid-South Food Bank, vegetables and canned goods were among the items passed out at Believing Church’s Grocery Drive Thru.

Pastor Michael Baier says one of the greatest needs in the community is the need for fresh, free food for many people.

Fun events planned for the weekend in Memphis

Baier says as a church, they want to help people fulfill their spiritual needs, but he says he understands people have a hierarchy of needs.

“I can tell you all day about my hope and my Savior, but if you’re starving, you ain’t listening to me,” he said.

For years, the church has distributed thousands of pounds of free groceries to people in need every fourth Saturday of the month.

“People in our neighborhood, man they’re working in restaurants, they’re building our homes, but sometimes they don’t have enough food to get through the month,” said Baier. “This is just another Saturday for us, where we are serving our community, trying to be a blessing in our neighborhood.”

Baier says starting this summer, they plan on distributing food twice a month instead of once.
