Berea City Council approves acceptance of FEMA funds for COVID expenses

Dec. 7—Sierra Marling

At the final Berea City Council meeting of 2022, city attorney Jerry Gilbert presented Resolution 13-2022, which would allow the city to accept Federal funds available from the Disaster Relief Act acquired from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Before moving to approve and adopt the resolution, Mayor Bruce Fraley called upon Berea City Administrator Rose Beverly to clarify the resolution to those in attendance.

According to Beverly, the resolution pertains to COVID disaster relief funds from 2020. Berea Fire Chief Shawn Sandlin gathered the required receipts to document the costs accrued by the city in purchasing masks, gloves, and other items meant to protect citizens from the spread of the COVID pandemic.

"He got all that together and turned that into FEMA, and this is what we're getting from that," Beverly explained. "I believe he had to turn it in a couple of times. There was some work put into this, so we really appreciate your work for that, Shawn."

The move to approve the resolution was made by Councilmember John Payne and seconded by Councilmember Teresa Scenters. The entire council approved the resolution with a unanimous vote.

No one in attendance specified the amount of spending city receipts showed for supplies or the amount of Federal funding possible.
