Bergen Co. Coronavirus Update: Nursing Homes Report 447 New Cases

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Between Wednesday and Thursday, the New Jersey Department of Health reported an additional 460 people had tested positive for the new coronavirus in Bergen County, and an additional 31 people had died.

The total number of cases of the new coronavirus in Bergen County has risen to 14,049, the New Jersey Department of Health reported Thursday. Also as of Thursday, 907 people have died from the virus in the county, according to the department.

In the same timeframe, 447 new cases of the virus were identified in Bergen County long-term care facilities, and 67 new deaths were reported.

The Department of Health on Thursday reported a total of 58 long-term care facilities in Bergen County have reported cases of the new coronavirus. According to state data, a total of 2,686 long-term care facility residents have tested positive for the virus across the county, and 559 residents in those facilities have died.

It's unclear whether the numbers of positive cases and deaths reported in long-term care facilities make up a percentage of the county's totals or represent even more positive cases and deaths. State and county health officials did not immediately respond to a request for clarification.

Across the state of New Jersey, a total of 99,989 people have tested positive for the virus, and a total of 5,368 people have died, according to NJDOH. The state reports 100,159 tests for the virus have returned a negative result.

HOW IT SPREADS:

The virus that causes COVID-19 is spreading from person-to-person. Someone who is actively sick with COVID-19 can spread the illness to others. That is why CDC recommends that these patients be isolated either in the hospital or at home (depending on how sick they are) until they are better and no longer pose a risk of infecting others.

Gov. Phil Murphy issued a new order requiring customers and employees wear face masks while inside essential businesses. The CDC recommends that every American wear a face mask while in public.

There is currently no vaccine for COVID-19.

While the best way to prevent illness is to avoid virus exposure, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention always recommends taking preventive actions to contain the spread of viruses. This includes:

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

  • Stay home when you are sick.

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipes.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

COPING WITH COVID-19 STRESS:

  • From the New Jersey Department of Health:

  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news/social media

  • Eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly

  • Get plenty of sleep; avoid alcohol/ drugs

  • Do things you enjoy like baking or walking the dog
