Bergen County's older residents invited to check out Senior Activity Centers
Special events and open houses will take place at Bergen County's 23 Senior Activity Centers in May in honor of "Older Americans Month."
Bergen County residents 60 and older are encouraged to visit one of the senior activity and nutrition sites for open houses and activities on May 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Bergen County Department of Human Services and Division of Senior Services have organized this countywide event in conjunction with Bergen County Executive James Tedesco and the Board of Commissioners. It will feature a special luncheon, activities and an overview of what Senior Activity Centers offer.
“This is a great opportunity for seniors to visit a Senior Activity Center or Nutrition Center near them to explore what types of programs are offered from educational, fitness and more," Tedesco said. "Seniors can socialize with like-minded people and learn about various program offerings that may be of interest while receiving a free, healthy and delicious meal at the same time."
Transportation to any of the locations is available by calling the Bergen County Division of Community Transportation at 201-368-5955 in advance.

“Nutrition services are also a link to other supportive in-home and community-based services such as homemaker and home-health aide services, transportation, physical activity and chronic disease self-management programs, home repair and modification, and falls prevention programs,” Commissioner Chairman Thomas J. Sullivan said. “We encourage all residents in their golden years to take advantage of county programming available to them.”
Since 1972, the national Senior Nutrition Program has supported nutrition services for older adults across the country. Funded by the Older Americans Act, local programs offer healthy meals and other vital services to people 60 and older that strengthen their social connections and promote well-being, Tedesco said. These critical programs promote nutrition services and help people stay independent as they age.
