Berks Catholic wins team title at Sam Lovello Classic wrestling tournament

Dec. 11—Berks Catholic won three individual titles and the team championship at the Sam Lovello Classic Saturday at Brandywine Heights.

Christopher Smith at 107, Gabe Davis at 172 and Owen Reber at 285 earned championships for the Saints.

In the finals, Smith, a junior, pinned Conwell Egan's Jeffrey Spofford in 1:56; Davis, a junior, pinned Milton Hershey's Marcus Rodriguez in 18 seconds; and Reber, a junior, pinned Lehighton's Reese Balk in 3:12.

Berks Catholic also had four wrestlers finish second: Gunnar Maciejewski at 121, Marvin Armistead at 133, Nathan Moschak at 139 and Brody Kline at 215. Five more Saints finished third: Brayden Hartranft at 114, John Maurer at 145, Ricardo Tinoco at 152, Carmine Lenzi at 160 and Timothy Saylor at 189.

Berks Catholic finished with 266 points. Conwell-Egan was second with 214.5 points.

Four other Berks teams participated in the 13-team event. Conrad Weiser finished fourth, Muhlenberg sixth, Brandywine Heights 11th and Oley Valley 12th.

Five additional Berks wrestlers advanced to finals and finished second: Oley Valley's Chase Parisan at 114, Brandywine Heights' Jacob Deysher at 127, Conrad Weiser's Dillon Britting at 145, and Muhlenberg's Caleb Hafer at 152 and Mason Zona at 189.

Finishing third from Berks were Brandywine Heights' Joshua Sterner at 145 and Muhlenberg's Tucker Bellanca at 215.

Five Conrad Weiser wrestlers finished fourth: Justin McGarrigle at 127, Bryson Gingrich at 133, Jake Jablonski at 160, Manny Rodriguez at 172 and Kaleb Britting at 285.

Finishing fifth were Muhlenberg's Javien Cruz at 107 and T.J. Simmon at 121, and Weiser's Jerry Garcia at 215.

Coming in sixth were Weiser's Jon Gress at 121, Muhlenberg's Bryant Kranwinkel at 133 and Nick Bradbury at 145, and Brandywine's Nicholas Browning at 172.

Homan wins title: Hamburg freshman Chase Homan won the 114-pound title at the Darren Klingerman Invitational Saturday at Bloomsburg High School.

Homan pinned Troy's Konner Kerr in 3:32 in the final.

Finishing second for Hamburg was Charles Sheppard at 285. He was pinned by Carlisle's Layton Schmick in 2:36 in the final.

Two other wrestlers placed for Hamburg, which finished 12th in the 24-team event. Daniel Brady was fourth at 139 pounds and Isabelle Wilkes was fifth at 107.

Two finish second at Penn Manor: Gov. Mifflin's Samuel Moyer and Twin Valley's Ean Winchester finished second at the Penn Manor Holiday Tournament Saturday at Millersville.

Moyer lost 8-6 in sudden victory to Benjamin Smith of Mount St. Joseph of Maryland at 160 pounds. Moyer had won his first three matches by fall.

Winchester lost 3-2 in the ultimate tiebreaker to Mount St. Joseph's Gavin Bage in the final. He won his first three matches by fall.

Other place winners from Gov. Mifflin, which finished eighth in the 28-team event, were Hunter Unger, third at 285; Andrew Huesgen, third at 145; and Brandon Jones, eighth at 189.

Exeter, which finished 16th, had three place winners: Michael Borja, third at 133; Matthew Dipiero, seventh at 152; and Dalton Moore, eighth at 107.

Jacob Grzybek finished fourth at 133 for Twin Valley, which placed 18th.

Wilson third at Boyertown: Wilson finished third at the Brian Bealer Memorial Bear Duals at Boyertown Saturday.

The Bulldogs went 4-1. They beat Interboro 72-4, lost to Pennridge 33-30, beat Garnet Valley 66-10, beat Boyertown 45-30, then defeated Owen J. Roberts 45-29 in the third-place match.

Five Wilson wrestlers went 5-0: McKaden Speece (114), Jimmy Garcia (127), Blaise Eidle (172), Ryan McMillan (215) and Logan Kurzweg (285).

Boyertown beat Souderton 45-21 in the fifth-place match. The Bears beat Interboro 72-0, defeated Garnet Valley 64-6 and lost to Pennridge 38-30.

Going 5-0 for Boyertown were Gavin Sheridan (133) and Ryder Gehris (160).

Easton beat Pennridge 40-19 in the championship match.
