Berks County Democratic Committee reelects chairman

Jun. 14—The person at the helm of the Berks County Democratic Committee remains the same following a reorganization meeting this month, however other leadership positions will welcome new faces.

Kevin Boughter was unanimously reelected to serve as chairman of the group. The Morgantown resident, who has led the organization for the past 14 years, said in a press release this week that he is eager to continue to serve in his position.

"We need to elect candidates who will act for the good of the people to preserve our rights, to respect the constitution and to deliver on what people need including health care, education and support for working families," he said.

Newly elected members of leadership are Debbie Noel of Robeson Township as vice chairwoman and Dan Wiekrykas of Exeter Township as treasurer. Zelda Yoder of Reading was reelected as secretary.

The following executive board members also were elected: Charles Corbit and Bernice Hines Corbit of Exeter Township; Tom Herman of Robeson Township; Raquel Capellan of Reading; Raymond Baker of Reading; and Sarah Brugnoli of Amity Township.

Boughter said a key priority of the leadership team is increasing voter turnout.

While Democrats continue to hold a slight edge in voter registration in the county, Republicans occupy most state elected positions in Berks as well as a majority on the board of commissioners and most row office seats at the courthouse.

Another big priority, he said, is making sure ballot access is secure and convenient.
