Berlin's Tierpark Zoo reveals name for new polar bear cub

Fritz, the new polar bear cub at Berlin's Tierpark

Berlin's Tierpark Zoo has christened Germany's new favorite polar bear cub 'Fritz'.

The zoo announced the news via Twitter Wednesday in the early hours of the morning, posting the following message: "'My friends call me Fritz' -- Short and simple is the new name of our little polar bear cub in #TierparkBerlin."

The little cub, born on November 3, 2016, is particularly special given that he marks the first polar bear litter at Berlin's Tierpark Zoo in more than 20 years.

His name was chosen by a panel from more than 10,000 names submitted by the public after the Berlin zoo, in conjunction with a number of media partners, called on the global community to send in prospective names for the young bear, receiving suggestions from as far out as Sweden, the US and Canada.

Fritz's first public debut is scheduled for March.
