New Bern weather: Heavy winds on the way, snow not expected with cold front
Areas of Craven County could see damage from a multi-threat storm system moving through the area Monday.
The main threat will come from gusty winds, which may cause downed tree branches and power outages, according to the forecast from the National Weather Service in Newport.
The strongest winds should come early this afternoon, with gusts of 30-35 mph. and sustained winds of around 20-25 mph. He said gusts of 41 mph had been reported at Coastal Carolina Regional Airport at 10 a.m. this morning, said Meteorologist Ryan Fucheck.
Fucheck said wind gusts should slow to 20-25 mph by 6 p.m., with sustained winds of around 10-15 mph.
“They should lower even further as we get into the 9-10 p.m. timeframe,” Fucheck said.
The winds are the result of a cold front moving through the area that will drop temperatures down as low as 38 degrees by 5 p.m. this evening, according to the National Weather Service.
Despite the dropping temperatures, Fucheck said any snowfall for the Craven County area was unlikely. The Weather Service forecast doesn’t call for any additional rain in the area after Monday morning, he noted.
“Outside of a stray sprinkle we won’t see much more precipitation,” Fucheck said. “If there was any chance for snow it would be further to the north.”
The forecast for the remainder of the week looks mostly clear, with no expectation of severe weather, said Fucheck.

According to recommendations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, residents experiencing downed limbs should keep the following safety tips in mind:
Only deal with limbs that are down on the ground or that you are sure you can work with safely. Never remove a limb hanging on a power line.
Trying to shake loose damaged limbs puts you at serious risk of injury and could end up damaging the tree worse than the storm itself. Remember, even small tree branches can weigh more than 100 pounds. It’s best to leave damaged limbs caught in the tree in place until someone with the proper training and safety equipment can come take care of it for you.
Use your chainsaw wisely. Whenever possible, keep the larger part of the limb between you and the smaller part that you're removing.
