Bernie Sanders Is Suspending His 2020 Presidential Campaign

After more than a year of campaigning, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is reportedly suspending his bid for the Democratic nomination.

In a livesteam on Wednesday afternoon, Sanders told viewers, “I wish I could give you better news, but I think you know the truth ... The path toward victory is virtually impossible." He added that it “has been a very difficult and painful decision,” noting that if he saw a “feasible path toward nomination” he would take it. “But as I see the crisis gripping the nation,” he continued, “I cannot in good conscience continue to mount a campaign that cannot win.”

“While this campaign is coming to an end, our movement is not,” he assured supporters. “The fight for justice is what out campaign has been about, the fight for justice is what our movement remains about.”

He added that while Biden will be the democratic party’s presidential nominee, he will remain on primary ballots and continue to amass delegates.

Concluding his speech, Sanders told viewers, “While the path may be slower now, we will change this nation, and with likeminded friends around the globe, change the entire world.”

Though Sanders initially emerged as the frontrunner following wins in the Iowa caucuses, New Hampshire primary, and Nevada caucuses, former Vice President Joe Biden soon overtook Sanders with a major win in South Carolina, and then sweeping victories on Super Tuesday and Big Tuesday.

Sanders previously campaigned in 2016, but lost the nomination to Hillary Clinton.

With Sanders’s withdrawal, Biden is the default presidential nominee for the Democratic Party. Biden will go up against Donald Trump in the general election come November.
