New Bern experienced its first frosty night of the fall with temperatures in the chilly lower 30s late Monday night into Tuesday morning.

The reason for the one-night freeze was due to high pressure, which allows the area to cool very effectively overnight, said Carl Barnes, meteorologist for National Weather Service in Newport.

"The first fall freeze usually occurs around Nov. 11, so we're just a little bit after normal," Barnes said.

Starting Tuesday temperatures will return to several warmer nights and days with humid air working into the area, but next week could be a different story.

"Maybe later in the week we could see some cold temperatures returning," Barnes said. "But, it's a little far out to say if we'll get below freezing."

He did say with the late fall presence, this time of the season is changeable, meaning the passage of an unexpected cold front could indicate a few cold days for New Bern.

Hopefully, everyone brought their plants and pets inside to a cozy home during the freeze, if not, here is what residents can do next time cold weather approaches.

How to care for your plants, pets and water pipes during cold weather

Unexpected freezes can destroy landscapes, so it is important to protect them during piercing temperatures.

Some important plant care tips during a freeze are to water your garden thoroughly, cover plants with a bucket or light blanket, bring them inside or cover with mulch or straw for support, according to organicgrowersschool.org.

For pet owners, the steps are simple for keeping furry companions from brutal air.

"We definitely recommend keeping them inside if possible," said Lexi Baker, veterinarian technician for The Pet Hospital of New Bern. "If they're outside, at least make sure they have shelter, heat lamps, enclosed shelter, and some bedding."

Residents should not forget about possible water pipe bursts as a result of a freeze.

Leaving the faucet on a slow drip and the cabinet open on very cold nights could prevent pipes from freezing, said Jonathan Crary of Scott Plumbing and Heating Company in New Bern.

Water is more likely to freeze when stationary, so leaving a small drip running will alleviate pressure and keep the water moving.
