Bertucci's closes last location in New Jersey

MOUNT LAUREL – And then there were none.

Bertucci’s has closed its only remaining New Jersey location on Nixon Drive in Mount Laurel.

A previous location on Route 73 in Marlton closed in December 2022 when the restaurant chain filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closed more restaurants at that time. Currently it has only 26 locations nationwide down from nearly 100 locations at one time.

In a June 20 bankruptcy court filing, the company reported a negative net worth of $25.3 million and a loss for May of about $304,500.

The firm said it employed 445 workers, down from 766 six months earlier.

The restaurant is owned by Florida-based Earl Enterprises, which also runs Brio Italian Grille, Planet Hollywood, Buca di Beppo, Earl of Sandwich and more.

Bertucci’s, a chain of family-friendly restaurants, serves classic Italian meals, pizzas, cocktails wine and beer. It’s known for its brick-oven pizzas and pastas.

Bertucci’s once had as many as seven locations in New Jersey, including a Gloucester Township site that closed after an earlier bankruptcy action. It still has two Pennsylvania locations and one in Delaware.

Founded in suburban Boston in 1981, Bertucci’s is now in about seven states between Massachusetts and Virginia, according to the company’s website.

According to a previous Courier Post story, the Chapter 11 filing in December was the second bankruptcy action in four years to involve the chain's restaurants. A previous operator declared bankruptcy in April 2018, citing competition from quick-casual restaurants and “over-saturation” in its industry.
