Over the years, Bessemer CIty like many other municipalities in Gaston County, has seen bursts of growth.

According to city manager Josh Ross that growth is expected to continue.

In an effort to pre-emptively address an increased need for public safety services, Bessemer City received $2.15 million in this year’s state budget, which will go toward new facilities for the fire and police departments.

A ceremony was held at City Hall Friday to celebrate the state representatives who helped secure the funding.

Bessemer City Mayor Becky S. Smith presented House Speaker Tim Moore, Representative Kelly Hastings and Senator Brad Overcash with plaques in honor of their work securing the funding.

The city’s dream is to have both the fire department and police department in one building, according to City Clerk Hydeia Hayes.

However, they could still find themselves in separate buildings, Ross said.

Earlier this year, City Council voted to funded a study to find out where they should start with public safety expansion to accommodate overall city growth.

That study is still in progress, but Ross says the funding will likely be used for the new facility or facilities.

The city does not yet have a timeline on the construction of the new facilities or allocation of the funds, according to Ross.
