Nantasket, Humarock, Cape Cod − the names evoke summer vacations and fun in the sand and surf.

But what about Quincy? Quincy is known for having the first Dunkin' Donuts. For having two U.S. presidents. For its quarries. And for celebrities including actresses Ruth Gordon and Lee Remick.

With so many great beaches within day-trip distance, Quincy wasn't widely known as a high-ranking beach town.

Until now.

A new report by the website Stacker.com names the City of Presidents the second-best beach town in the Bay State, behind only Eastham. The rankings were based on factors including the number of beaches, the amount of shoreline, access to beach-related services and median home values.

Some people sitting in traffic on their way to Cape Cod might debate Quincy's second-place honor, but the city's 27 miles of shoreline tracing its peninsulas, bays, coves and rivers provide plenty of spots where beachgoers can enjoy the sun, sand and surf without ever having to deal with Route 3.

How many beaches are in Quincy? The answer depends on whom you ask. The Stacker.com report says Quincy has 19 separate beaches. The Environmental Protection Agency's Beach Advisory and Closing On-line Notification system says there are 17. Quincy names an additional two beaches not listed by the EPA.

And what about the aforementioned Nantasket, Humarock and Cape Cod beaches? Stacker.com ranks Hull eighth and Scituate 15th. Plymouth ranks 24th. The Cape and Islands claim most of the rest of the Top 25. Eastham takes the No. 1 spot.
