Best bets: Dinner, books or blues for winter's night out

Transatlantic Train: Boston, Liverpool, and Cape Cod Sea Captains, with Vincent Miles

Presented by the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. Enoch Train was a poor orphan from a remote country village who somehow became one of the most important maritime figures in nineteenth-century Boston. He played a key role in the career of renowned shipbuilder Donald McKay, and operated Boston’s most successful transatlantic shipping line. Two of his most trusted captains were Cape Codders from maritime families — one of whom, sadly, was lost in tragic circumstances on a return voyage from Liverpool. Speaker Vincent J. Miles grew up in Liverpool, England, but has lived in the United States for close to 40 years. He wrote "The Lost Hero of Cape Cod" about Yarmouthport Captain Asa Eldridge, whose 1854 voyage from New York to Liverpool on the clipper ship Red Jacket, set a record that has never been beaten for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic by a sailing ship. Admission is $10. To register, visit website www.hsoy.org or pay at the door. The Cultural Center of Cape Cod is at 307 Old Main St. in South Yarmouth.

Classic osso buco to stay or to go

Chef Joseph Cizynski
Chef Joseph Cizynski

From 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 24, chef Joe Cizynski will host a dinner and talk about how to make the classic northern Italian dish, osso buco: veal shanks, braised in a subtle wine sauce, then finished with a bright gremolata (fresh parsley, lemon zest, and garlic), have an undeserved reputation of requiring large amounts of both time and expertise in the kitchen. But few dishes are more forgiving. Dinner starts with a hearty winter green salad with truffle vinaigrette, osso buco with gremolta and risotto alla Milanese, and a creamy ricotta tart to finish. We will pour complimentary Nebbiolo from Piedmont. This is a BYOB event and wines from Northwest Italy are recommended. This event will be held in the Owl Cafe. $75/$65 for members. Register at www.cultural-center.org or call 508-394-7100. Osso buco dinners will be available for takeout on Jan. 25.

The Cape catches a case of the blues

Band members are Paul Giovine on drums, Carol Band keyboards, harmonica and vocals, James Gildea on bass guitar and vocals, and Conrad Warre on guitar and vocals. In addition to their original and danceable numbers, the group offers their own interpretation of less-travelled tunes by artists including Etta James, Joe Zawinul, J.B. Lenoir, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Robert Cray, Fenton Robinson, Grant Green, Otis Rush, Edgar Winter, Michael Burks, Jimmy Cliff, Albert Collins and The Three Kings.  Tickets, $25-$35, are available here.
