From comic book artists to vintage rock tributes to a screening of a 1980s movie hit under the stars, there are plenty of fun entertainment options this weekend in Volusia and Flagler counties.

Here are some of the best bets:

A slice of comic-book heaven

An array of vintage and contemporary comic books, magazines, pulp and underground publications, as well as original art, toys, action figures and other collectibles will be in the spotlight at the annual Daytona Beach Comic Convention this weekend at the Volusia County Fairgrounds.

Billed as the longest running comic book, toy and collectible convention in Daytona Beach, the event will take over the 21,000-square foot Tommy Lawrence Arena on Saturday and Sunday at the fairgrounds, 3150 E. New York Ave. in DeLand.

Admission is $10 per day or $15 for the weekend at the door. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday.

In addition to all the collectibles on sale, the convention also will offer the opportunities to meet comic book artists, writers, and creators behind the works. Those artists include Richard Bonk, whose two decades in the industry include work for DC, Dark Horse, Chaos! Comics, Zenescope and others.

Boats on parade in Daytona Beach

With an abundance of lakes, rivers and ocean waters, there’s no better spot to own a boat than in Volusia and Flagler counties.

This weekend, boat owners and aspiring nautical types can immerse themselves in the latest vessels and accessories at the annual Daytona Boat Show unfolding Friday-Sunday at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach.

The show will feature the products of more than 70 manufacturers as well as representatives of more than a dozen of Central Florida’s top boat dealers.

Among the dealers on hand will be Aloha Marine Center, a fixture in Holly Hill for 50 years, Daytona-based Blue Water Marine, Port Orange-based Atlantic Marine as well as Orlando-area dealers including VForce Marine and Ultimate Marine.

Brands represented range from Chris-Craft and Cobia to Robalo and Sailfish.

Tickets are $5 per person per day, with ages 12 and under admitted free. For the kids, there will be a catch-and-release trout pond to test their angling skills.

Hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

A Star Spangled Bandshell show

The summer vibe still lingers through September at the historic Daytona Beach Bandshell, which continues to host its weekly “Star-Spangled Summer” concert series through Sept. 30.

Here’s what’s on tap this weekend:

On Saturday, the “Star Spangled Summer” show will feature “In the Light of Led Zeppelin,” a tribute to the legendary rock band that ruled guitar-driven hard rock and heavy metal in the 1970s.

The 7:15 p.m. concert will be followed by fireworks over the beach at 9:45.

Laser rock also rolls

The music of Led Zeppelin also will be part of the mix as the Museum of Arts & Sciences in Daytona Beach offers its Second Saturday Laser Rock Concerts this weekend at the museum’s Lowell and Nancy Lohman Family Planetarium at 352 S. Nova Road in Daytona Beach.

The lineup this Saturday features “Laser Spirit” at 7 p.m., followed by “Laser Metallica” at 8 p.m.; and “Laser Zeppelin” at 9 p.m.

Tickets are $4 per show for members, $5 per show for non-members and advance purchase is recommended. Call the museum at 386-255-0285 or visit moas.org to reserve a seat.

In Flagler County, it's outdoor movie time

The 1984 comedy hit “Ghostbusters” will be the featured presentation at the September edition of Movies in the Park on Friday at Central Park in Palm Coast.

Show time is 7:50 p.m. and admission is free. Audience members are encouraged to bring along a blanket, lawn chairs or picnic baskets, as well as some bug spray, just in case. The movie will be shown on a giant outdoor screen at the park, 975 Central Avenue in Palm Coast.
