The best brisket you'll ever make — or eat — just in time for Rosh Hashanah

Jaime Walters grew up eating her grandma's brisket at Jewish holidays.

Grandma Blanche Rosenberg, who today lives in Lakewood, New Jersey, has the easiest and best recipe for the meat dish, her granddaughter maintained, that is traditionally served on the Jewish New Year, which this year falls on Sept. 6, Labor Day.

Walters should know. She now makes the dish for the holidays for her grandma, who is 89, and the entire family.

"My Grandma Blanche used to host Rosh Hashanah and other holidays on her own," said Walters, a print planner for The Record and NorthJersey.com who lives in Lincoln Park. "Preparing and cooking all day, for our family of about 25. Since she’s older now, we split all the dishes up and I’ve taken on the important role to provide this dish for dinner. The best part about our holiday dinners is that we can still share them with my gram."

And with a recipe this easy, there's plenty of time to enjoy time with family.

Grandma Blanche’s Brisket

1 large can ShopRite tomato sauce*

2½ - 3 pounds brisket

1 packet of onion soup

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Line bottom of pan (or slow cooker) with the tomato sauce, just enough to line bottom.

Rub onion soup contents on both sides of meat; then place in pan.

Pour rest of sauce over meat.

Fill half of sauce can with water and pour over meat.

Seal tight with tinfoil and cook in oven for at least 2 hours until tender. If using slow cooker, cook on high for 6 hours.

Serves: 8 to 10

* Jaime Walters has tried other tomato sauces and maintains "this one has the best outcome and flavor."
