Car dealerships are celebrating Independence Day with discounted prices on select new cars now through the holiday weekend. This year the fireworks might not be as bright as in years past, with the auto industry facing chip shortages, inflation hitting material costs, and reduced inventory. But Consumer Reports’ analysis shows there are still some deals available on good cars and SUVs if you know where to look.

To find the best car deals for July Fourth, Consumer Reports’ analysts studied national incentives to find models worth consideration. To make sure the featured SUVs represent smart buys, we concentrated on models with a strong Overall Score, factoring in road-test performance, owner satisfaction, reliability, and safety. (Learn more about CR’s car ratings.)

All models featured below have nationwide incentives that are good until July 5, 2022. The vehicles are listed in order of percentage of potential savings off the sticker price, from 9 percent to 5 percent. Similar discounts can be found on other versions in addition to the specific trim and configuration that we spotlight.

Many models are staples for these lists, such as the Cadillac XT5, Chevrolet Equinox, and Dodge Charger. It is surprising to see the Toyota Prius Prime carry incentives, given gas today’s prices. Beware that inventory is very low nationwide on that plug-in hybrid. But if you do find one, it looks like you can get a good price.

There may be regional deals that outshine these national offerings. They can be found through CR’s Build & Buy Car Buying Service, a program that allows shoppers to configure the car they want, compare local transaction prices, and have participating dealers provide their best offer, which should include any of the multiple incentives now being offered.

Detailed pricing information and complete ratings are available for all current vehicles on their respective model pages, linked to below.
