Find your 'best friend' at Clear the Shelters event in Bergen County this weekend

TETERBORO — Dogs, cats and rabbits will be looking for their forever homes this weekend at the Bergen County Animal Shelter's Clear the Shelters event.

This weekend you can meet Forrest, a Siberian husky mix, who is friendly and loyal, or Wanda, a Jersey Wooly rabbit who prefers a home with children.

The shelter, at 100 United Lane in Teterboro, will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The Bergen County Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter that can hold up to 425 animals, including 105 dogs. The shelter is busier than normal this time of year because of kittens that are old enough for adoption, said Amanda Karpinski, a county information officer.

There are almost 40 pets ready for adoption that can be viewed on Pet Finder to see special characteristics about each.

The adoption fee for a dog is $150, a kitten $100 and a rabbit $35.

Not looking to adopt, but want to help?

The shelter is always looking for donations. Currently, towels and blankets are a top priority, Karpinski said. Specific items can be found on the shelter's Amazon wish list.

Other items needed are:

  • Newspapers.

  • Clean pet carriers.

  • Dog crates.

  • Dog leashes.

  • Adjustable Martingale collars (medium and large).

  • Heating pads.

  • Wet or dry cat or kitten food.

  • Pill Pockets.

  • Shoe boxes or small boxes for cat or kitten beds or litter boxes.

  • Dog treats.

  • Durable, rugged dog toys and rope toys for tough chewers.

  • Unscented baby wipes.

  • Paper towels.

  • Chicken or beef broth, the low-sodium kind.

  • Peanut butter (please check that is does not contain Xylitol).

  • Rabbit, guinea pig or hamster supplies (treats, fresh veggies, Care Fresh bedding).
