A snowboard jacket is a big investment, so you'll want to make sure it meets all of your needs, keeping you warm in the coldest temperatures and protected from wind on the slopes. Your snowboard jacket should enhance your riding experience, whether you're plowing through powder or hitting rails in the park. There are three different types of jackets you’ll find covered in this roundup, including shells, insulated jackets, and even a 3-in-1 option.

A shell jacket is a lightweight, versatile outer layer designed to protect against wind and moisture. It's typically made from breathable, waterproof materials like Gore-Tex. Because it doesn’t have insulation, it allows for greater adaptability to various weather conditions through layering.

An insulated jacket is designed to provide warmth and comfort in cold conditions. It integrates insulation materials like down or synthetic fibers, trapping body heat and helping to eliminate the need for tons of layering.

A 3-in-1 jacket consists of an outer shell and a detachable inner layer. The outer shell typically offers waterproof and windproof protection, while the removable mid-layer provides insulation.

When it comes to a snowboard jacket, details matter. Look for features that will make your day more comfortable, like a powder skirt, cinchable hood, or oversized pocket. It's a lot to consider, so we did the research and testing so you can focus on the big decision of which jacket to buy.

The prices for models we selected range from under $100 to more than $700, and include some key brands like Dakine, 686 and Obermeyer. This year, we’re seeing more jackets in bold and bright color blocked designs, and even more jackets using Gore-Tex.

Best Men's Snowboard Jackets

The Expert: I'm a gear tester and journalist based in Alberta, Canada with first-hand experience in apparel that can hold up in Canadian winters. I spent nearly 15 years living outside the Rocky Mountains where temperatures can dip as low as −35°F. To create this list, I consulted Alvaro Garcia, who has been snowboarding for the last eight years. While newer on the scene, Alvaro spends at least 40 days on the mountain every winter, and spends his summers chasing snow in locations like Chile, New Zealand, and Patagonia. He also volunteers as a Level 1 snowboard instructor for the Canadian Adaptive Snowsport Association, and is involved in multiple local ski and snowboard associations.

What to Consider

Warmth/Insulation

Snowboard jacket insulation varies widely: Down insulation, prized for warmth-to-weight ratio, offers excellent heat retention but performs poorly when wet. Synthetic insulation, less packable but more water-resistant, provides consistent warmth even in damp conditions.

Waterproofing/Construction

Below you'll see we use Waterproof/Breathable ratings like 10K/5K. The higher the waterproof rating, the more waterproof the material is. The higher the breathability rating, the more the fabric will be able to release moisture and vapor, minimizing trapped sweat, and helping to regulate your temperature.

Breathability

Gore-Tex or other waterproof/breathable membranes are top-of-the-line when it comes to three-layer jackets, but waterproof jackets are naturally less breathable than non-waterproof, so you'll want to make sure the jacket has decent venting.

Weight

Snowboard jackets vary in weight depending on their design and insulation. Shell jackets are the lightest, offering weather protection without bulk. They are ideal for active, high-movement snowboarding or in milder conditions. Insulated jackets are heavier but provide built-in warmth. They are better for colder climates and riding where you need less flexibility, like typical resort or even park riding.

Pockets/Organization

Snowboard jackets are designed with practicality in mind, featuring a variety of pockets and organizational features. They often include zippered hand pockets, chest pockets for easy access, internal media and goggle pockets, and a sleeve pass pocket.

Pit Zips/Powder Skirts

Pit zips on snowboard jackets offer ventilation, allowing riders to regulate body temperature by releasing excess heat during intense activity. Powder skirts, a protective feature at the jacket's waist, prevent snow from entering the jacket during falls or deep powder riding.

How we Selected

With my background in snowboarding and gear testing paired with Alvaro's experience and love for research, we took into consideration some of the most important factors for choosing a snowboard jacket. This includes overall quality of construction, features, and the reputation of the brands we recommend. We also considered different price points, and included more affordable options for people who might not be hitting the slopes as often. Other than that, we focused on breathable, waterproof shells because of their ability to perform well under a variety of circumstances.

Q+A

How should I wash my snowboard jacket?

Washing your snowboard jacket properly is crucial to maintaining its quality and prolonging its lifespan. Read the label to get specific instructions from the manufacturer regarding washing and drying. You can also consider spot cleaning your jacket if there are only small stains.

What should I wear for springtime splitboarding?

For springtime splitboarding, wear layers for versatility. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep you dry. Add a breathable, lightweight mid-layer for insulation. Choose a waterproof, breathable shell jacket and pants for protection against wet conditions. Opt for lighter gloves and a beanie or headband.

Why is seam taping important?

Seam taping is crucial for snow gear because it ensures waterproofness and wind resistance. In snow gear construction, needle holes from stitching can become potential entry points for moisture and cold air. Seam taping involves applying waterproof tape over the seams, sealing these holes.
