The Best Movies Of 2021 So Far (And 32 More We're Pumped to See)
2020 was going to be a big year for movies. But then, uh, you know...COVID. We still got some good ones via streaming and VOD release—looking at you, Da 5 Bloods, Birds of Prey, and Sound of Metal, to name a few—but many of the biggest and most awaited movies of the year will now help 2021 (hopefully!) double up with cinematic goodness.
A few of these movies have already been released this year, and, thus, we feel comfortable already saying that they'll deserve a spot on this list all year long. But some others, whether they're blockbusters we should've seen a year ago—like the latest James Bond outing or Marvel Cinematic Universe movie—or brand new true story tales—like Judas and the Black Messiah or Nomadland—should certainly be on the way in 2021.
We're psyched for all kinds of movies. That could be some of the huge blockbusters we already talked about, or some of the smaller independent films that we want to talk your ear off and make sure you watch, and love, and talk someone else's ear off. That's the whole point of loving movies; if you like one of the huge ones, great, but it can sometimes feel even better to find one flying under the radar that you love, and making sure the whole world knows just how good it is.
And with our list below, we think we've found a great mix. Can't wait for Dune? Neither can we. But we also can't wait for A24's Zola, Bob Odenkirk going full action hero in Nobody, or an absolutely wild Ridley Scott/Matt Damon/Ben Affleck/Adam Driver team-up (read on for more about that one). That's not even to get started on some of the horror offerings—a Saw reboot starring Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson?—that we've got in store this year.
Look, it's too early for me to get this excited. It's only the intro, after all. Read on for some of the movies we've already seen and loved, and a ton more that we really cannot wait to see.
Some that we already know are good—and some that we feel pretty damn good about.
