Best pizza in DC, Virginia according to Yelp

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Yelp released its Top 100 Pizza Spots in the country, according to Yelp Elites, and a few places in the DMV made the list.

Yelp Elites is a group of self-nominated, active reviewers whom Yelp says make a difference and support local businesses by sharing their expertise. Yelp created this list by compiling and ranking the restaurants with the most 5-star reviews from Yelp Elites.

Yelp names the top 100 pizza places in the US: Did your favorite make the cut?

While the top spot went to a place in Chicago, and pizza joints across New York and California dominated the list, a few places in D.C. and Virginia represent the DMV in the Top 100 (with at least one nod to Maryland because of one restaurant’s multiple locations).

il Canale

This restaurant is Yelp’s best place for pizza in D.C. (and the DMV), in terms of the list of businesses. Ranked 14, il Canale is a Georgetown Italian restaurant with a high profile that attracts politicians and celebrities alike, according to its website.

Based on the number of reviews, the restaurant’s popular pizzas are the Margherita, the Diavola, which includes spicy imported Calabrese salami, the La Regina, which has fresh basil and prosciutto, and the Napoli, which has olives and artichokes. Known for its authentic pizza, it is the only restaurant in D.C. to receive the top culinary honor from the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce and the National Institute of Tourism.

Pizzeria Paradiso

Pizzeria Paradiso ranked 38 on the list. What started as a small business in a town house in Dupont Circle has grown into four locations across D.C. and Hyattsville, Md. Yelp classifies the joint as a pizzeria and beer bar, which is fitting for its selection of more than 12 draft beers and 200 bottled beers. The reviews show the favorite pizzas are the Diavolo, Pepperoni, and Margherita pizzas.

2 Amys Neapolitan Pizzeria

2 Amy’s is home to classic Neapolitan wood-fired pizza. Ranking at 50 on Yelp’s list, one of the Yelp Elite reviewers called 2 Amy’s “the quintessential neighborhood pizza spot.” 2 Amy’s is in Cathedral Heights. Yelp reviewers favor the Margherita pizza and the stuffed pizza, which looks similar to a calzone.

Lena’s Wood-Fired Pizza & Tap

Lena’s Wood-Fired Pizza & Tap is the only place on Yelp’s list from Virginia, coming in at 74. Located near Old Town West in Alexandria, Lena’s uses a custom-built wood-burning oven to craft its pizzas, and that’s not the only thing they serve. As the business’ name indicates, Lena’s also has a large range of craft beers, especially from local breweries. Yelp’s menu favorites include the Diavola pizza, garlic parmesan wings, and tiramisu. Lena’s prides itself on it’s authentic Neapolitan pizzas and the sourcing of its ingredients, “the finest available anywhere,” according to the restaurant’s website.
