Best pizza in Rhode Island? Here are 7 reader picks for a great slice

Picking a favorite pizza place is a bit like being asked to pick a favorite child: impossible and wrong.

Most people have a few favorites, that they love equally for different reasons. But, unlike picking a favorite child, it's OK to at least try to pick a favorite pizza.

The Providence Journal recently put it to readers in an unscientific poll. First, we asked readers to nominate places to include in the poll on our Instagram page @ProJoEats, which we then compiled into a true poll asking people to vote for their favorite.

Hundreds of votes later, here are the top seven reader picks.

First place: Antonio's Pizza in Providence

Antonio's Pizza is a favorite and a staple for pizza in Providence.

The clear and decisive winner of this poll Antonio's Pizza by the Slice is so popular, in part, because it has literally something for everybody. The topping options are seemingly endless, with classic pizzas, BBQ steak pizzas, veggie pesto pizzas, chicken pizzas and more veggie pizzas. Their 256 Thayer St. location, open since 2002, has long been the go-to for people looking to grab a slice, but their takeout is not to be missed either.

Runner up: Piemonte Pizza and Grill in Providence

This family-run pizza shop, at 114 Doyle Ave., specializes in Italian and Mediterranean dishes, two of the world's pizza hot spots. While you can certainly order a cheese pizza here, their menu also boasts dishes like the Veggie Kurdish Pizza with roasted potatoes, minced onions, roasted red peppers, crushed tomatoes, fresh garlic, parsley and sun-dried chili served with fresh lemon, or their house special with sweet Italian sausage, ricotta and mozzarella cheese, crushed tomatoes and fresh basil. It's a must-try.

Third Place: Caserta’s in Providence

It's no surprise readers love this spot as it was recently named one of the best pizza spots in the country by The Washington Post for those looking for a slice of Sicilian-style pizza. If being in The Washington Post wasn't enough, Caserta's, 121 Spruce St., other claim to fame is the Wimpy Skippy, a spinach pie stuffed with black olives, cheese and pepperoni. No matter what, you won't be disappointed if you place an order on a Friday night.

Fourth Place: Twin’s Pizza in North Providence

Twin's Pizza, at 1000 Mineral Spring Ave., is a classic pizzeria. Around for long enough to be an institution, the DelRicci family knows a thing or two about pizza. A place that asks you how you want your pizza cooked – medium, done or well done – it's the place to go to get an old-school, classic pizza.

Fifth place: Federal Hill Pizza in Warren

Federal Hill Pizza, at 495 Main St., has been featured on Phantom Gourmet, the Food Network and in The Washington Post. It's the real deal Neapolitan-style pizza, which makes sense because owner Billy Manzo is a master pizzaioli certified in Italy. That's right. There are certifications. If it's good enough for Italy, it's good enough for Rhode Islanders.

Sixth place: Pasquale’s Pizzeria Napoletana in Wakefield

Ranked the No. 12 best pizza in the country by the prestigious Guide to the Best Pizzerias in the World, the pizza at Pasquale's is undeniably exemplary. The guide described the pizza as "authentically Neapolitan. It is light because it is well-leavened and masterfully baked in a wood-fired oven that was built professionally by a Neapolitan master craftsman. Among the pizzas, we recommend you try the New York style; like the very special “Grandma,” it is very tasty." With kudos like that, it's no wonder readers like it too. Find it at 59 South County Commons Way.

Pizza Marvin, 465 Wickenden St., has set out to reimagine the old-school style pizza restaurant by capturing the neighborhood feeling but introducing modern food. For example, take the carbonara pizza topped with shishito, pancetta, egg and pecorino. Creative, right? Also delicious, as proven by their nomination for a James Beard Award and The Providence Journal readers who voted for them.
