It’s no secret that (mostly) everybody loves pizza — but some favor certain regional styles of pizza over others, like a Chicago deep-dish, Detroit style or a classic New York slice.
So what is the most popular style among foodies in the South?
The Washington Post released a report on the best pizza in America, region by region, based on 7.5 million Yelp reviews, to determine the most popular pizza style and the top pizza places in each state.
Based on their data, New York style pizza is the top choice in 42 states, including North Carolina. While it’s the dominant pick for pizza lovers, there are still other popular places for other types of pizzas.
The team used a formula that accounted for rating, the number of reviews and how often reviews mentioned that particular pizza style. The “national directory of pizza” does include restaurants that may serve more than one style of pizza, but their rankings in specific categories are based on styles specifically listed in reviews, according to the study.
Pizza places all over the state were highly ranked in the study, including several in Charlotte and the Raleigh-Durham area. Here’s which restaurants were named the best in North Carolina, depending on your pizza preference:

“Thick and tall crusts of a deep dish, often with sauce layered atop the cheese,” the report says.
