The third month of the year brings winter to a close, and with it, the anticipation of spring and summer beyond. Flowers start to bloom, the days get a little longer, and we are more than ready for fun outdoor things to do. From food festivals to world-famous parades, here are the best places to travel to this March. Go ahead - start planning your trip!

Miami Gardens, Florida

Music lovers will have a ball at the annual Jazz in the Gardens Music Fest, which takes place at the Hard Rock Stadium (home of the Miami Dolphins) in Miami Gardens on March 9 and 10. This year's lineup features jazz singer Maysa, guitarist Chieli Minucci, as well as performers like Lionel Richie, Bobby Brown, and En Vogue.

Austin, Texas

Each spring, South by Southwest pretty much takes over the city of Austin. This massive festival, which takes place from March 8 through 17, offers a little bit of everything, including concerts, film screenings, conferences, interactive media, technology demonstrations, and comedy performances - not to mention lots of tacos and tequila.

New York, New York

New York's St. Patrick's Day Parade is the oldest and largest St. Patrick's Day parade, making it one of the best places to be on March 17. Traveling along Fifth Avenue, from 44th to 79th streets, it features plenty of marchers, marching bands, and bagpipes, so don your green and get ready to celebrate! (Since March 17 falls on Sunday, this year's parade will take place on Saturday, March 16.)

Seattle, Washington

At the Taste of Washington wine fest, held from March 28 to 31, in Seattle (named a top 2019 city by Lonely Planet), more than 225 Washington state wineries are represented, including Yakima Valley rosés, Columbia Valley cabernet sauvignons, and Walla Walla Valley syrahs. You won't get to sample all of them, but there's nothing to prevent you from trying!

Charleston, South Carolina

The Charleston Food + Wine Festival is a 5-day foodie fest held each March (this year's dates are March 6 through 10), held at various venues throughout the Holy City. In the Culinary Village in Marion Square, you can sample everything from fried chicken bites and mini pork buns to pecan liqueur and wine from Virginia and other Southern states.

Ann Arbor, Michigan

Established in 1963, the Ann Arbor Film Festival is one of the country's oldest film festivals. The 6-day event (this year's dates are March 26 through 31), features screenings of both feature and short films, including many international entries; panels; filmmaker awards; juror presentations; lectures; and plenty of cool after parties.

Boise, Idaho

Never heard of Treefort Music Festival? This indie-minded festival (March 20-24), which got its start in 2012, has been named by Thrillist as one of this year's best music festivals. The festival takes place in downtown Boise and the lineup includes Liz Phair, Toro Y Moi, and Angelique Kidjo, among many others. There will also be food, craft ales, and yoga classes.

Washington, D.C.

If you’ve never seen Washington’s cherry trees in full bloom, make this the year! A 1912 gift from Japan, thousands of the trees blossom with pinkish-white flowers each spring. Coinciding with the trees in bloom is the National Cherry Blossom Festival (March 21 – April 14), filled with parades, street festivals, performances, family activities, and fireworks.

Dana Point, California

Over two weekends (March 2 and 3, and 9 and 10), the SoCal city of Dana Point holds its annual Festival of the Whales. In addition to numerous whale watching cruises, where you're likely to spot gray whales, the family-friendly event includes a parade with helium whale balloons, a clam chowder cook-off, classic car and boat displays, and live music.
