Shopping for a new refrigerator? You’ve come to the right place.

The refrigerator lab at Consumer Reports is a busy place. Our testers are constantly evaluating new models and adding them to our refrigerator ratings, which include models of all configurations: bottom-freezer, built-in, counter-depth, French-door, side-by-side, and top-freezer.

The lines between these categories, though, are blurring. Today’s refrigerators have more doors, and once exclusive features have trickled down to more affordable styles, such as top-freezers and side-by-sides. “We’ve even seen models that give you the capability to convert some compartments from freezer to fridge and vice versa,” says Larry Ciufo, who oversees CR’s refrigerator testing.

During testing, we outfit each refrigerator with thermocouples in a climate-controlled chamber and monitor it for a month, collecting more than 5.4 million temperature readings that identify warm and cold spots to determine which models will keep your food fresh longer. We also factor in survey data from thousands of CR members to judge brand reliability and satisfaction. All of that—and then some—informs CR’s refrigerator ratings and each model’s Overall Score.

To help you find the ideal refrigerator, we organize our ratings by the width of the appliance. After all, the best refrigerator in the world is useless if it doesn’t fit the slot in your kitchen. You can see the top models by width in our comprehensive refrigerator ratings.

Below, CR members can read ratings and reviews of the best refrigerator for each type we test. They include models of several widths from Dacor, LG, and Whirlpool.

Best French-Door Refrigerator

CR’s take: The 36-inch-wide LG LRFXC2416S comes loaded with the features we track and more: shelves that can be adjusted without moving the food on them, air and water filters, and a second icemaker (in addition to the dispenser in the door) that molds elegantly curved and oversized cubes for cocktails. This model is similar to the CR-tested (and now discontinued) LG LRFXC2406S, and we expect it to perform identically. The tested model delivered Excellent performance almost across the board. The one exception is energy efficiency, where its Good score lands in the bottom half of the pack. Its more expensive siblings—the LG LRFVC2406S and the sleeker and still pricier LG SRFVC2406S—have transparent door-in-door compartments.

For top-rated narrower models, see our roundup of the best French-door refrigerators from CR’s tests.

Best Side-by-Side Refrigerator

CR’s take: The LG LSXS26326S is a superb side-by-side model for the money. This CR Best Buy notches Excellent scores on nearly all of our tests—the one exception is a Very Good rating for energy use. The model’s Overall Score doesn’t quite reflect this performance because our latest member surveys reveal that LG side-by-sides rate only Good for both reliability and owner satisfaction (though the latter lands at the top end of the category). This 36-inch-wide model has a fairly typical array of features for a side-by-side, including a locking external water/ice dispenser, a built-in water filter, and gallon-sized storage bins on the door.

Best Top-Freezer Refrigerator

Whirlpool WRT112CZJZ

CR’s take: At just 24 inches wide, the Whirlpool WRT112CZJZ is one of the narrowest top-freezers available, but it’s one of the best models in our ratings for its size. And thanks to its sub-$600 price, it’s also a CR Best Buy. The unit earns Excellent ratings for crucial cooling functions and for noise output, making it the quietest in the class, and scores Very Good for energy efficiency. Its Poor score for ease of use is typical of top-freezers, as is its lack of features, though this Whirlpool does offer gallon storage on the doors. In surveys of our members, Whirlpool top-freezers rated Excellent for predicted reliability but Fair for owner satisfaction, a common combination among top-freezer brands.

Best Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator

CR’s take: The affordably priced 33-inch-wide LG LRDCS2603S, a CR Best Buy, is rated Excellent at controlling the temperature and ensuring that it’s uniform around the unit, and Very Good at conserving energy. It earns Good ratings for noise and ease of use. This model’s overall performance gets a boost because, in our latest surveys, CR members gave LG bottom-freezers Excellent marks for predicted reliability and Very Good ratings for owner satisfaction. And compared with many bottom-freezers, this LG is rich in features. It’s outfitted with an icemaker, a built-in water filter, spillproof shelves, and gallon-sized bins on the doors.

Best Built-In Refrigerator

Dacor DRF427500AP

CR’s take: The 42-inch-wide Dacor DRF427500AP, one of the biggest models we’ve tested, edges out the other top-performing built-in refrigerators in CR’s lab tests. It boasts Excellent ratings for thermostat control, temperature uniformity, and noise while earning Good ratings for energy efficiency and ease of use. This French-door model is equipped with a built-in water filter, spillproof shelves, and an icemaker. One note: We don’t have enough data yet from our member surveys to give Dacor’s French-door refrigerators predicted reliability and owner satisfaction ratings.
