From Town & Country

One of two Relais & Chateaux properties in Connecticut, Winvian Farm, located in Northwest Connecticut near the tony horse-country town of Sharon, is a mix of luxury with a touch of eccentricity. (One of their cabins is an actual tree house.) A hideaway for in-the-know and discerning travelers, the property has the feel of going to visit a friend for the weekend-if, say, that friend lived on a 113-acre farm with numerous guests cottages, a 5,000 square foot spa, and an outdoor pool. Maggie Smith, the owner of Winvian Farm, talks to T&C about the design, creature comforts, and nature wonder land of the area that keeps guests coming back for more.

YOU HAVE MANY UNIQUE ROOMS AT WINVIAN FARM, INCLUDING ONE WITH AN ACTUAL HELICOPTER. BUT WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER “THE BEST” ON THE PROPERTY? AND WHY?

Beaver Lodge is one of the most unique accommodations at Winvian Farm and its interior design conveys a rustic New England trapper’s cottage infused with the luxe amenities expected at a world-class resort. Much of the cottage was constructed of natural and sustainable materials that bring nature inside the 1,200 square-foot space. Upon entering guests are enfolded into a canopy of trees that were collected from the property and the artistry of stonework of the massive two-sided, wood burning fireplace provides cozy nooks while nestled in bed or on the living room sofa. Over the bed is an actual beaver den!

THE PROPERTY IS LOCATED NEAR SOME EXTRAORDINARY NATURE. WHAT ARE SOME IDEAL OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES FOR GUESTS TO ENJOY?

For starters, each cottage has 2 bicycles for our guests to use. We provide kayaks and canoes for use on nearby Bantam Lake. Winvian Farm is bounded on three sides by 4,000+ acres of White Memorial Nature Preserve which is replete with walking and hiking trails. We are in the neighborhood of several wineries along the Connecticut Wine Trail. On property, we offer croquet, corn hole, badminton, volleyball, soccer, and our outdoor, heated pool. Bonfires with S’mores are popular year round.

WINVIAN FARM IS ONE OF THE ONLY RELAIS & CHATEAUX PROPERTIES IN CONNECTICUT. HOW DID YOU RECEIVE THAT DISTINCTION?

Shortly after opening in 2007, we were visited and vetted by Relais & Chateaux agents. After being evaluated, we were honored to be invited to join this exclusive organization. We have many guests who stay only at R&C properties because they know and trust the Relais Brand and are confident they will receive a wonderful and relaxing stay for their holiday investment.
