Since its release in September 2017, This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor has been at the centre of many dinner table conversations and gone on to be a best-seller.
The book, which details everything from the 97-hour weeks to the life and death decisions of a junior doctor, sold over one million copies and was the winner of a record four National Book Awards: Book of the Year, Non-Fiction Book of the Year, New Writer of the Year and Zoe Ball Book Club Book of the Year. So it should probably come as no surprise that BBC Two have announced they're going to adapt Adam Kay's account of life on the labour ward into a major seven-part comedy drama. Here's what you need to know about the adaptation.
When was This Is Going To Hurt announced?
In August 2017, BBC Two revealed the series will be produced by Sister Pictures and adapted by Adam himself, who said of the TV project: "Junior doctors tend to have a rather quiet voice compared to the politicians, which is understandable - you don’t have much spare time if you’re working 100 hour weeks.
"It’s been a huge privilege to have my diaries reach so many readers and it’s been absolutely humbling to see their reaction. I’m beyond delighted to now be able to share my story with a far wider audience and make the viewers of BBC Two laugh, cry and vomit."
What will happen in This Is Going To Hurt?
This Is Going To Hurt details the diary entries Adam scribbled after endless days and sleepless nights, while working on the labour ward during training as a junior doctor. It's both gut-wrenching and hilarious, giving a brutally honest depiction of life for the 1.4 million people working on the front line of the NHS each day.
Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, added: "The anarchic, laugh out loud tone of Adam’s memoir masks a frank, insightful and often visceral portrait of a committed young professional struggling to do the job of his dreams. It is a deeply personal but definitive account of the 21st Century NHS and we are thrilled that Adam and the team at Hootenanny and Sister have chosen BBC Two as the place to bring it to screen."
Who will star in This Is Going To Hurt?
Emmy, BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning lead Ben Whishaw from Skyfall and Mary Poppins will play Adam. He's joined by:
Newcomer Ambika Mod as Shruti, "a young junior doctor just starting in obstetrics and gynaecology. Naturally bright, diligent and caring, she has everything it takes to be a great doctor, but the job still finds ways to throw her into chaos and doubt."
Michele Austin as Tracy, "a confident, sharp-witted senior midwife."
Alex Jennings (The Crown, A Very English Scandal) as "Mr Lockhart, a consultant and Adam’s domineering boss."
Kadiff Kirwan from Chewing Gum as Julian, "Adam’s colleague and professional rival."
Ashley McGuire from This Country and It’s A Sin as Miss Houghton, "a formidable and forthright consultant who spots potential in Shruti."
Harriet Walter (Killing Eve, The Crown, Succession) plays Veronique, Adam’s mother. Rory Fleck Byrne plays Adam’s boyfriend Harry, and Tom Durant-Pritchard (The Crown) plays Adam’s best friend Greg; his two closest relationships and the ones forced to face the brunt of the pressures he faces at work.
When will This Is Going To Hurt be released?
No news of a release date for now, but the BBC teaser pictures (released in June 2021) suggest filming has at least started, if not already wrapped. Can we expect a late-2021 release? Maybe!
