Reviewed: The Best Vacuums of 2023 for Every Situation, Surface & Budget
Our editors independently select the products we recommend. We may earn a commission on items bought through our links.
When it comes to major purchases, vacuums are pretty far down on the sexy list — we get it. But we also know that vacuums are appliances that people use quite often, even daily, in some cases (pet parents, we see you). So, while purchasing a new model may not be as exciting as other big-ticket items like the best TVs or a shiny smartphone, it’s important to get one of the best vacuums; one that works for you and your home with the right amount of modern tech.

The thing is, today, finding the best vacuum isn’t easy since the category has become much broader. Gone are the days of the behemoth sucker that sat lurking in the closet with its robust chrome plating. Today, there are far more user-friendly cordless stick vacuums, discrete handheld vacuums, and the most low-maintenance of all — robot vacuums. We bow down to robot vacuums, not because they’re a technological marvel, but mostly because they’re saving us from the back pain of pushing and lugging traditionally heavier models.
But with the big changes in the vacuum landscape, some things remain the same. There are still big budget options that will last for years and more affordable models that can get the job done. Opting for fewer features and attachments can save you money, while high-powered vacuums with excellent suction justify their price tags.
Whether you want to spend less than $100 or more than $1,000 to clean your home, car, furniture, hard floors, carpets, or all of them, there’s a vacuum (or two) for you. Check out our SPY-tested picks for the best vacuums of 2023.

Full Review: We Found the Ultimate Home Cleaning Duo With These Two Hoover ONEPWR Cordless Vacuums
With the best suction power we’ve seen in a cordless stick vacuum and an impressive amount of maneuverability, the Hoover ONEPWR Evolve Pet Cordless Small Upright Vacuum Cleaner claimed, for us, is hands-down the best vacuum for 2023. Its generous dustbin does not require frequent emptying, but when it is time to empty it, we find it easy to clean.
The Hoover ONEPWR Evolve can easily switch between three flooring modes with the touch of a button, making this a great option for those with hard flooring and carpet. It’s one of the quietest vacuums we tested, and it has an impressive 24 minutes of battery life when used on carpet and hard floors. We also like that the ONEPWR uses a removable 4.0 Ah MAX battery pack that charges fast and can be swapped with other ONEPWR items, including a Hoover handheld vacuum, which we also named as one of the best vacuums.
The ONEPWR Evolve is excellent for use on stairs and has a smooth glide that we found very user-friendly. There are some drawbacks, including no LED light on the brush head, no attachments, and no digital timer indicating remaining battery power. But its user-friendly design, smooth maneuverability, and excellent suction made it our top pick.
Pros
Self-standing
Lightweight
Removeable battery convenient for charging
Large dustbin
Good battery life
Cons
No attachments included

Best For: Customers who want a budget-friendly vacuum that can tackle their home and auto cleaning needs.
Why We Chose It: The Greenworks is the best vacuum for customization with its useful attachments, a removable battery pack, and a freestanding stand that doubles as a charging bank.
Battery Life | 45 minutes max |
Attachments | 4 |
Dustbin Capacity | Unclear |
Weight | 7 lbs. |
Charging Time | 30 minutes |
Full Review: Greenworks 24V Brushless Cordless Stick Vacuum Gives Customers A Huge Bang For Their Buck
The Greenworks 24V White Cordless Stick Vacuum was so close to being our number one pick for the best vacuum overall. It is harder to maneuver than the Hoover ONEPWR and comes in at a higher price point, but the increase in cost is definitely backed up by added features, including four useful attachments, LED lights, a digital display screen that shows the remaining charge time, and a charging station.
The combo we reviewed included a backup 4Ah battery, which is a great option for larger homes. It also included a stand that held the vacuum, charging station, and all four accessories. For customers who want to save money, Greenworks offers the same vacuum without the stand and backup battery for about $150 less.
The battery life was slightly shorter than the Hoover ONEPWR when we used the Greenworks on the middle setting, which was necessary on the carpet. We could get about 17 minutes of runtime versus 22 with the Hoover. The Greenworks was also a bit clunkier to use on stairs, but thanks to the additional attachments, users can also opt to use the Motorized Brush or one of the other attachments for stairs.
We also didn’t like that the Greenworks wasn’t freestanding and had a slightly smaller dustbin than the Hoover ONEPWR, but it has plenty of other features, including a digital display and LED lights, that earned it a top spot on our list.
Pros
Includes extra battery
Charging Port
Freestanding Stand
Useful attachments
Good suction
Cons
Not freestanding
Small dustbin

Best For: The heavy-duty suction on the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Turbo Plus makes it a solid pick for pet parents with a lot of hair on their hands… and floors and furniture.
Why We Chose It: The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Turbo Plus has an impressive level of suction and its corded design makes it a good choice for large homes. We also found it easy to maneuver for a heavyweight vacuum.

Full Review: The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Turbo Plus Is a Lightweight Vacuum That Really Does Make Pet Hair Vanish
While most of the vacuums that made our list are cordless, we did want to include the best corded vacuum option for customers who prefer not to worry about charging times. The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Turbo Plus is our top pick for a corded vacuum thanks to its high suction level and impressive maneuverability.
The Bissell is designed specifically for pet owners and we found that it did an excellent job cleaning pet hair off carpet and hard floors, as well as furniture. But it’s also a great vacuum for non-pet owners who still want the benefits of a vacuum that can handle big messes in one pass.
The Bissell isn’t nearly as loud as other corded vacuums. In fact, we found its noise level on par with the best cordless vacuums tested for this review. It comes with several useful attachments, and we liked that it also had clips for those attachments, allowing users to secure the loose items directly onto the vacuum.
The Bissell boasts a useful LED light and an intuitive, user-friendly design. Our main issue was that it’s not a great vacuum for stairs. Even with the extension hose, we could not clean a flight of stairs without carrying the vacuum up the staircase, which is strenuous with its 14.2-pound weight.
Pros
No waiting between charges
Excellent suction
LED lights on vacuum base and crevice tool
Dust bin is easy to remove and clean
Convenient storage for each accessory
Cons
Heavy
Extendable hose not long enough to vacuum flight of stairs

Why We Chose It: We’ve tested several Roborock models and have yet to be disappointed in any of their vacuums or vacuum and mop combos. The tech on the Roborock S7 Max V Ultra Robot Vacuum is top-of-the-line and the high price is justified by the user-friendly design.

Full Review: Does The Roborock S7 Max V Ultra Robot Vacuum Really Suck?
If you hate vacuuming but love clean floors, it doesn’t get much more luxurious than the Roborock S7 Max V Ultra Robot Vacuum. This model is the absolute best vacuum for those who, well, want no part in it. It has the best tech in a robot vacuum, and it’s incredibly user-friendly thanks to its docking station.
Not only is this model self-emptying, but it’s also self-filling. The Empty Wash Fill Dock can hold up to seven weeks of dirt and dust, similar to Roborock’s other self-emptying dock, but this one also automatically refills the water tank when the Roborock returns to its dock, giving it a mopping range of up to 300 square meters. Plus, it cleans the mop pad and houses the dirty water. This means users don’t have to remove the mop pad and throw it in the washing machine after every mopping job, which is such a cool feature.
The Roborock S7 Max V Ultra Robot Vacuum checks every box for those who want a high-tech robot mop and vacuum. It maps, has plenty of settings to customize each clean fully, remembers rooms, adjusts easily between hard floors and carpets, can and will avoid obstacles, and even has a camera that users can access on the app. It does a great job cleaning up small spills and messes and can easily pick up hair, dirt, and dust.
To be clear, we know the Roborock S7 Max V Ultra Robot Vacuum has a massive price tag. Like, gargantuan. While we totally believe it’s justified, it may be out of reach for many customers. For a slightly more affordable option from Roborock, also consider the Roborock S7+ Robot Vacuum and Sonic Mop with Self-Empty Dock, which was our top pick for Best Vacuum and Mop Robot until the Roborock S7 Max V Ultra Robot Vacuum was released.
Pros
Minimal maintenance
Excellent mopping and vacuuming capabilities
Easy to customize in app
Self-cleaning
Quiet
Cons

With 14 minutes of runtime, the Hoover ONEPWR Cordless Hand Held Vacuum Cleaner has enough battery power to be used for several small cleaning jobs before it requires recharging.
The sizeable dustbin can handle medium-sized messes, and we like that it can pick up larger objects, like dry kibble, making this an excellent option for pet owners. We also like that the dustbin is clear and easy to see through, helping users to see whether they’ve accidentally vacuumed an important item that should be removed.
For those who also like to keep their cars clean, the ONEPWR, for us, is the best vacuum for cleaning seats and mats and does a great job getting into tighter spots.

AIRROBO P20

$120 At Walmart
Best For: Dog owners and anyone looking for an affordable robot vacuum that can handle hair, dust, and small crumbs.
Why We Chose It: The Airrobo P20 has an incredible price point for any style of vacuum, especially a robot vacuum. It has a user-friendly design that doesn’t require WiFi and includes some customization features.
Battery Life | 120 minutes |
Attachments | Remote control and includes extra filter, cleaning brush, and two side brushes |
Dustbin Capacity | 20.5 ounces |
Weight | 8.36 lbs. |
Charging Time | 5 hours |
Full Review: The AIRROBO P20 Is A Budget Friendly Robot Vacuum Pet Owners Will Love
Robot vacuums have been priced out of reach for a long time for many customers, which is why we were excited to try the Airrobo P20. Priced at under $200 and often on sale for closer to $100, the budget-friendly robot vacuum is an excellent bargain thanks to its impressive suction level and user-friendly tech.
Released this past summer, the Airrobo P20 can be controlled using the Airrobo app, but the P20 also includes a remote. This allows it to work even if your WiFi is offline and makes it more user-friendly for older customers who may not be tech-savvy.
The Airrobo P20 does not have mopping features, and unlike most of its most expensive competitors, no mapping technology that would allow users to set do not go zones or specify certain areas or rooms they want to be cleaned. We also found that while it is quiet in its lowest suction mode (55 dB), it’s much louder in its highest setting (66 dB), which is necessary for carpets or large crumbs.
Still, there is a lot to like about the Airrobo P20. It has a geometric design on top that makes it look like a high-end gadget. Its remote and app were easy to use, and the setup took about three minutes. It comes with an extra filter and side brushes, and Airrobo makes it easy for customers to buy replacement pieces on their site and on Amazon. Users can also schedule cleaning times on the app.
We were especially impressed by its ability to detect falls. We tested the Airrobo P20 throughout our home, which has many stairs and open railings, and the Airrobo P20 thankfully did not do any cliff diving.
Pros
Affordable
Quiet in lower suction setting
Includes remote
Sizeable dustbin
Good for picking up hair and dry messes
Cons
Can’t customize a route
Noisy on Powerful Suction mode

Full Story: Samsung Just Released the Sexiest Vacuum We’ve Ever Seen – Meet the Bespoke Jet
When we think of bespoke, we don’t usually think about a vacuum cleaner, but Samsung, another brand renowned for making the best vacuums, has delivered to us the Bespoke Jet Cordless Stick Vacuum. Not only is this basically the only cleaning tool that boasts sex appeal, but it’s also a SPY Smart Home Award winner for innovation.
Recently, for Samsung, product releases have been edging brands like Apple in terms of design excellence, and we see that with the Bespoke Jet vacuum. The product is incredibly sleek and very impressive for its product category. But in terms of cleaning, aesthetics don’t matter so much, so how does it clean?
When we tested this vacuum, we immediately noticed that it was much lighter than most other stick vacuums we’ve tested, especially other Samsung models. Ultimately, heaver vacuums lead to easier fatigue, but between the weight and joint, maneuvering it was effortless. The suction was also great and effectively picked up pet hair and small debris we dropped on the ground for our controlled test of the different attachment heads. We were able to get a full clean in on one battery (didn’t need the second) but noticed that when using it on high mode, it used more power, which was to be expected.
What we loved most about the Samsung Bespoke Jet vacuum comes down to air pollution, or the lack thereof. This vacuum’s innovative design is complimented by a charging station that sucks out the device’s dust bin but also prevents those tiny particles in the transfer from disbursing into the air. Furthermore, that dustbin is also washable which is great because ours got pretty messy.
Pros
Amazing futuristic design (we said it was sexy in our first look piece, and we stand by that)
Easy to maneuver cordless stick
Clean station dustbin emptying feature is really unique and cool. Never worry about emptying dustbin or air quality.
Good attachments
Cons
Price is kind of absurd, though it justifies cost in our testing
Can’t store in closet
Must order replacement vacuum bags from Samsung

Dyson V15 Detect Stick Vacuum

$600 at target
Best For: Homeowners with tough-to-reach areas who love to be up on the latest technology.
Why We Chose It: While this isn’t the best stick vacuum for the average person, this smart vacuum does present clear advantages over even the best robot vacuums.
Battery Life | Up to 60 minutes |
Attachments | 5 |
Dustbin Capacity | 25.6 ounces |
Weight | 6.8 lbs. |
Charging Time | 4.5 hours |
Full Review: Are the Dyson V15 Detect’s Upgrades What the Average Person Needs?
We were so excited to try one of the latest models from, who many would consider the best vacuum brand out there, Dyson. The Dyson V15 Detect vacuum is one of the brand’s most intelligent models to date, boasting a multitude of handy attachments, including two separate heads, and major tech upgrades that include a laser and a display screen showing scientific proof of your cleaning.
We loved the ability to choose which head, between the Laser Slim Fluffy and the Digital Motorbar, was best for our cleaning project throughout the six months we tested this vacuum. We mainly opted for the latter, as it was the most effective for picking up long hair from carpet and hardwood floors without becoming a tangly mess or clogging the suction source — an incredibly convenient aspect. We also found the conical hair screw tool very effective. And overall, this was one of the best vacuums for versatility and suction power, tackling wood, carpet, and even dusty books.
But the most seemingly impressive feature of the Dyson V15 Detect, one that we felt put it in the running among the best vacuums, was the laser technology. A green laser illuminates the floor to show dirt and debris that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Now, despite how technologically packed this vacuum might be, we did find our gripes. While the laser works, we did notice that light was abundant, the laser field was practically invisible, rendering it useless. Additionally, while the display screen was useful to determine remaining battery life, the “scientific proof” component didn’t render extremely helpful in our cleaning.
Pros
Powerful suction
Easy maneuverability
Cordless design
Adapts to different floor types
Quiet
Cons
Smart features won’t be crucial for average users
Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner has less powerful suction than Digital Motorbar
Emptying the bin can be messy
Small dustbin not optimal for large spaces
How We Tested the Best Vacuums for 2023
Choosing the style and model of the best vacuum for your needs can depend on several factors. How often do you typically vacuum? A corded or cordless stick vacuum with minimal attachments should be fine if you vacuum infrequently.
Do you have any mobility issues? If so, you’ll want to avoid heavy corded uprights and opt for a robot or cordless stick vacuum.
Is it in your budget to have two of the best vacuums? Then you may want to invest in a robot vacuum for daily cleans and a corded upright or cordless stick vacuum for stairs, high pile rugs, and large messes.
Here are a few more points to consider when shopping for a vacuum.
Price: While it’s not always the case, increasing your budget will typically result in a higher-end vacuum, which means more suction power, additional accessories, and, in the case of robots, better tech. Still, there are great options for the more budget-conscious, but customers must decide what features they can live without.
Features: This area highly depends on the type of vacuum you purchase. Upright corded vacuums are known to have powerful suction but are heavy. If maneuverability and weight are important, opting for a more expensive corded vacuum option may be necessary to maintain a high level of suction with a lighter vacuum. For cordless stick vacuums, battery power and suction can vary widely. In the world of robot vacuums, the higher the price tag typically means the better the suction power and tech, two things that can enable users to be hands-off.
Storage Space: We often forget about storage space when it comes to vacuums until the giant vacuum box arrives at your door. For robot vacuums, scout where you will place the unit and its base and ensure you have enough clearance. While our bargain pick of the Airrobo P20 doesn’t require much space, the Roborock S7 Max V Ultra has a big footprint and the dock is also quite tall. We’ve also included vacuums that come with wall mounts, as well as one that has its own storage stand for user convenience.
Why Trust SPY When Shopping for the Best Vacuums?
For 2023, SPY reviewers have been tirelessly making messes to ensure we’ve got stuff to vacuum. Among what we’ve tested are dozens of smart and robot vacuums, some even with mopping capabilities, convenient stick vacuums that weigh next to nothing, and also handheld and traditional corded vacuums. And though our storage space has dwindled down to near zero, it’s worth our time to bring some facts to our readers.
Do note that SPY would never recommend a product that we wouldn’t buy ourselves, and so we do take price and value into consideration when determining our product rankings. As time goes on and new models become available, we’ll look to update this shopping guide. Brands cannot pay SPY for product reviews. The products we choose for our shopping guides are based solely on our editorial reviews and testing.
