If you're looking for deals on electronics this holiday season, Walmart's Black Friday sales event is a good place to start. Among the best offers are an Apple Watch for $130, a Samsung tablet for $149, and an HP Pavilion gaming laptop for $500.
According to the retailer's Black Friday circular ad, you can also receive gift cards worth up to $450 when you purchase a new Apple or Samsung phone.
Walmart’s Black Friday sale begins online at 10 p.m. ET on Nov. 27—the day before Thanksgiving. The in-store sales kick off at 6 p.m. local time Thanksgiving Day.
According to the retailer's Black Friday ad, there are no “doorbusters,” or limited-time offers, spaced throughout the day, making it a bit easier to plot your moves.
But, if you're ready to do a little advance scouting, here are the best deals on tech products in Walmart's sale.
iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, XS, XS Max, and XR
The deal: Gift cards of $300 to $450 with the purchase of an iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, XS, XS Max, or XR at Walmart
CR’s test results: iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, XS, XS Max, XR
Retailers rarely discount smartphones, but they will throw in store gift cards this time of year. Walmart’s offers, which are in-store only, are some of the most generous out there. If you buy an iPhone 11, 11 Pro, or 11 Pro Max, you get a $300 gift card. Buy an XS Max or XR and it's $400. And the iPhone XS earns you $450. And you can get another gift card worth up to $250 with the trade-in of a qualifying phone. But there are a couple of catches. You have to activate your new phone for AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon service and you have to finance it with that carrier, too.
Samsung Galaxy S10, S10+, and Note10+
The deal: A $450 gift card with the purchase of a Samsung Galaxy S10, S10+, or Note10+ at Walmart
CR’s test results: Samsung Galaxy S10, S10+ and Note10+
This offer basically mirrors Walmart’s iPhone deals. All of the same conditions apply and you also can get an additional gift card worth up to $250 for an eligible trade-in. And, if you’re looking for a slightly cheaper model, Walmart also is offering $300 gift cards with the purchase of a Galaxy S10e or Note9.
15.6-Inch HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop
The deal: $500 at Walmart
CR’s test results: HP Pavilion Gaming 15-CX0058WM
This gaming model normally lists for around $750. What makes it a gaming model? The higher-end specs, for one: It’s got an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of memory, and 256GB of solid state storage. There’s also a dedicated Nvidia graphics card, which means you can play modern games (like “Fortnite”) at high settings and also edit high-res video. We tested this model and gave it mostly high marks, although—like many a gaming laptop—it's a little heavy at more than 5 pounds. 10.2-Inch iPad 32GB
The deal: $249 at Walmart
CR’s test results: 10.2-Inch iPad (2019)
That’s $80 off the normal price for the newest base iPad. Beyond having a slightly larger screen than the 9.7-inch model from 2018, this one also is compatible with Apple’s Smart Keyboard cover, which attaches magnetically and doesn’t require charging or pairing like a Bluetooth keyboard—handy for anyone planning to do a lot of typing.
10.1-Inch Samsung Galaxy Tab A
The deal: $149 at Walmart
CR test results: Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 SM-T580 (16GB)
The retailer currently sells this model for $198 and we've seen it drop only as low as $179, which makes this a terrific deal. Our testers rate the tablet Very Good or Excellent across the board. And, if that 16GB of storage seems low to you, you can quickly and inexpensively expand the storage with a micro SD card.
50-Inch Onn 4K Roku TV
The deal: $148 at Walmart
This set hails from Walmart’s own Onn brand. The model number isn’t listed, but we think it’s the Onn ONA50UB19E05, which usually sells for $100 more. We haven’t tested the TV, but we did evaluate the 55-inch Onn ONA55UB19E06 model. That one offers surprisingly decent high-definition picture quality, but it’s one of the few 4K sets we’ve tested that doesn’t support HDR, which limited its Ultra High Definition performance. For more television bargains, check out our story on Walmart’s Black Friday TV sales.
Apple Watch Series 3
The deal: $130 at Walmart
CR’s test results: Apple Watch Series 3 (38mm) Aluminum Case GPS
This is by far the best deal we’ve seen so far on Apple’s budget smartwatch. While it originally came out two years ago, the model is compatible with Apple’s latest watch operating system and still ranks fairly high in our ratings. Looking for the bigger 42mm size? Walmart has that one for $160.
JBL GO 2 Bluetooth Speaker
The deal: $20 at Walmart
While the list price is $40, this model is frequently discounted and sells for $30 on JBL’s website. Consumer Reports hasn’t evaluated the GO 2, but our testers say the previous-generation GO is easy to use and versatile, but the sound quality is not stellar, with anemic bass, grainy midrange, and highs that are “somewhat sizzly.”
Google Nest Mini Smart Speaker
The deal: $19 at Walmart
CR’s test results: Google Nest Mini (first generation)
This tiny smart speaker is cheap, but this is a savings of only $6 off the $25 list price. Note that this is the first-generation model, which has been replaced by a newer model that Google claims offers better sound; CR has yet to test the second-gen Mini, which carries a $49 price tag. Our testers found the first-generation Mini easy to use, but while its sound quality was adequate for podcasts and other spoken content, it was lacking when it came to playing music.
