Best of the Week: Hunter runs for 235 yards to lead Silverado past Rancho Verde

A week after being held to just nine yards of offense, the Silverado football team bounced back in a 26-14 victory over Rancho Verde at home Friday night.

The Hawks, led by running back Fredrick Hunter, tallied 311 yards of total offense.

Hunter alone racked up 235 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.

Hunter broke free for a 93-yard touchdown in the first quarter and gave the Hawks a 20-14 lead in the third quarter with a 73-yard rush.

Quarterback Gabriel Campos completed four passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Campos connected with Darren Gandy on three passes for 67 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Gandy also recorded an interception on defense.

The Hawks trailed 14-13 at the half, and held the Mustangs scoreless the rest of the way.

Silverado (4-2) begins Desert Sky League action at home Thursday against Victor Valley.

At Victorville, Brooke Ebright and Kylie Weber swept with three bagels in doubles action and the Knights didn’t drop a set in singles play.

Granite Hills also got sweeps in singles action from Leila Debrito (6-3, 6-1, 6-0) and Jaida Walker-Butler (6-3, 6-2, 6-2).

PREP CROSS COUNTRY

The AAE boys squad handed Big Bear its first-ever loss in Cross Valley League action.

The Bears hadn’t lost any league meets since joining the CVL in 2016.

Elijah Lovett led the way for AAE with a second-place finish (18:49.7). The Knights topped the bears by three points.

In the girls race, University Prep took first as a team with 48 points, led by Zury Andersen’s second-place time of 23:51.3.

CIMS finished in second with 64 points, with Mia Villa’s third-place finish (23:59.9) leading the way.

The league is back in action on Oct. 4 in Helendale.

At Phelan, the Diamondbacks swept the Sun Devils )25-12, 25-11, 25-10) as Madi DiGiorgio racked up 17 kills and five aces.

Lauren Gott added 15 kills; Lilly West served three aces with two kills; Macy Kavanaugh dished 30 assists with four kills; Kelsey Gomarko ended with six assists and 11 digs; and Lily Thorne had two blocks.

Oak Hills 3, Sultana 0

Keonahi'ilani Solaita led the Bulldogs with 23 kills and ace and 22 digs in a sweep over the Sultans.

Maddie Brown added 10 kills and four digs for the Bulldogs; Sarah Pagnoni dished 36 assists with 10 digs and two aces; Holly Medina served two aces with 13 digs; and Angelina Lopez added an ace, a kill and 15 digs.

For Sultana, Mary Sanchez led with five kills, an ace, 10 digs; Lola Hansen added three kills, an ace and 17 digs.

ACE 3, PAL Academy 0 

Danaka Pelayes served 10 aces and dished assists to help lead the Eagles to a sweep (25-10, 25-12, 25-6).

Kinsley Esposito served nine aces to go along with six kills and an assist, and Kayleigh Dupree added four kills and three aces.

The Hesperia boys team took first at the first Mojave River League cluster of the season.

Victor Amaro’s third-place finish (16:59.4) led the way for the Scorpions. Burroughs' Zion Ortiz took first, followed by Oak Hills' Raye Duarte (16:46.4).

In the girls race, Burroughs runners took the top four times. Oak Hills' Grace Dorado took fifth, followed by Serrano's Siena Burns.

The second MRL cluster meet is scheduled for Tuesday in Ridgecrest.

The Cougars remained unbeaten in Desert Sky League action with a victory over the Aztecs.

Granite Hills got sweeps from the doubles teams of Victoria Villegas and Ziran Pang (6-0, 6-0, 6-1) and Deserae Romero and Kimberly Soltero (6-0, 6-1, 6-0).

The Cougars (8-2, 6-0 DSL) are back in action Tuesday at Silverado.

Madi DiGiorgio led the offense with 11 kills, and three aces; Lauren Gott added 10 kills and three aces; Natalie Galaviz had three kills and three blocks; Lilly West ended with five kills; Macy Kavanaugh dished 26 assists; and Kelsey Gomarko added 17 digs and three assists.

For Sultana, Mary Sanchez led with four kills, 13 digs and an assist; Mishelle Dominguez added three kills, nine blocks, five digs and two assists; and Breezy DeNase had three kills and three digs.

The Sultans (6-11, 1-3 Mojave River League) travel to Hesperia on Tuesday, while Serrano (4-0 MRL) hosts Oak Hills in a battle for first place.

ACE 3, UCSA 0 

Kayleigh Dupree led the Eagles with a season-high 15 kills in a sweep over the Saints (26-24, 25-16, 25-20).

Danaka Pelayes dished 12 assists with three aces and three digs; Olivia Benitez added nine kills with two aces; and Abigail Rodarte dished eight assists with a kill.

ACE (13-4, 7-1 Agape League) is back in action Tuesday at Silver Valley.

At Avalon, Arlan Koester completed 12 passes for 235 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Patriots to victory.

Ayden Ortega caught five of those passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns, and Caleb Audet caught four passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns.

Hesperia Christian (3-1) is back in action at home against Lucerne Valley on Friday.
