Best of the Week: Oak Hills volleyball is off to a fast start in MRL action

The Oak Hills volleyball team is off to a fast start as Mojave River League action kicked off last week.

The Bulldogs played two games last week and didn’t drop a set with Keonahi'ilani Solaita leading the way.

Solaita racked up 19 kills, four aces, 10 digs and a block in a 3-0 victory over Apple Valley (25-17, 25-17, 25-19) on Sept. 15.

Madison Brown added 10 kills, two aces and eight digs; and Sara Pagnoni dished 31 assists with nine digs and an ace.

In the league opener on Sept. 13, Solaita paced the offense in a sweep (25-19, 25-16, 25-18) over Hesperia.

Solaita tallied 20 kills with 16 digs and four aces; Gianna Senna added four kills, an ace and a block; and Pagnoni dished 29 assists with two aces and six digs.

The Bulldogs (9-5-3, 2-0 MRL) are back in action Tuesday against Sultana.

Silverado 13, Victor Valley 5

At Victorville, Fabiola Testa swept with three bagels to lead the Hawks past the Jackrabbits in the Desert Sky League opener.

Emily Barajas and Ellie Valdez swept in doubles action (6-1, 6-0, 7-6 (6).

At Oxnard, Melissa Ortiz recorded a hat trick to lead the Rams on the road.

VVC led 2-1 at the half and held on for the victory.

Carmen Gonzalez and Eileen Quezada combined for five saves in goal.

At Ridgecrest, the Diamondbacks kicked off Mojave River League action with a sweep (25-18, 25-22, 25-15) over the Burros.

Lauren Gott led the way with 13 kills; Madi DiGiorgio added seven kills and five aces; Shelby Lopez dished 19 assists; and Kelsey Gomarko tallied 16 digs.

ACE 3, Victor Valley Christian 0 

Araceli Manzo served 11 aces to go along with six kills as the Eagles swept the Royals (25-9, 25-7, 25-13).

Juju Santillanes added nine aces and two assists.

Sultana 3, Apple Valley 0

At Hesperia, the Sultans kicked off Mojave River League action with a sweep (25-17, 27-25, 25-20) over the Sun Devils.

Mishelle Dominguez led the way for Apple Valley with 14 kills, 15 blocks, an ace and 11 digs; Mary Sanchez added 13 kills and 19 digs; Isabella Abeyta dished 23 assists with nine digs and two kills.

ACE 3, Victor Valley 0

The Eagles swept the Jackrabbits (25-23, 25-14, 25-15) in a nonleague match as Kayleigh Dupree paced the offense with eight kills, three aces and five digs.

Danaka Pelayes dished 12 assists with three kills and two aces; Kinsley Esposito added five kills with an ace; and Araceli Manzo had four kills and an ace.

Granite Hills 16, Victor Valley 2

The Cougars got sweeps in singles action from Leila Debrito (6-0, 6-2, 6-2) and Mariah Zapata (6-2, 6-1, 6-1).

The doubles team of Deserae Romero and Kimberly Soltero also swept 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

Granite Hills (5-2, 3-0 Desert Sky League) is back in action Monday at home against Silverado.

At Adelanto, the Saints didn’t drop a set in doubles action and picked up their first win in Desert Sky League action.

Adelanto’s No. 1 singles player Melissa Otero swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

The Saints (3-3, 1-2 DSL) head to Barstow on Monday.

At Hesperia, the Burros beat the Sultans (25-15, 25-23, 12-25, 25-12) as Tiara Manns led the way with 21 kills and Maddy Meinert added 16.

For Sultana, Mary Sanchez led the Sultans with seven kills and eight digs, and Mishelle Dominguez had six kills, an ace and four digs.

The Sultans (6-9, 1-1 Mojave River League) are back in action Tuesday at Oak Hills.

ACE 3, Summit Leadership Academy 0

The Eagles improved to 5-1 in Agape League action with a sweep over the Eagles (25-5, 25-6, 25-15).

Abby Rodarte served a dozen aces with five assists; Kayleigh Dupree ended with five aces, two kills and two assists; Danaka Pelayes dished four assists with three aces; and Taylor Coffel added three kills and two assists.

ACE (11-4, 5-1 Agape League) is back in action Tuesday at home against PAL Academy.

Sept. 16

PREP FOOTBALL

Barstow 25, Burroughs 15

At Barstow, the Aztecs put up 540 yards of total offense in a victory over the Burros.

Dwayne Williams completed 10 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns to different receivers.

Quesey Gaoa caught two passes for 92 yards and a touchdown and Johntae Drisdom also reeled in two passes for 87 yards and a touchdown.

Demetri Curiel led the Aztecs with 248 yards of offense. He caught four passes for 92 yards and a touchdown, and also took 14 carries for 156 yards and a touchdown.

Barstow (3-2) is back in action Sept. 23 on the road with a long bus ride to Palo Verde Valley.

Horizon Prep 42, ACE 12

At Helendale, the Eagles dropped to 0-2 on the season with a loss at home.

Due to injuries, third string quarterback Jimmy Flores stepped in and ran for 107 yards.

ACE returns to action Sept. 23 at home against Calvary Chapel.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOCCER

Victor Valley College 3, Porterville 1

At Victorville, the Rams scored three goals in an eight-minute span to pull off a victory at home.

Melissa Ortiz scored the first of her two goals on an assist from Ashley Mendoza in the 75th minute to even the score.

Five minutes later, Reyna Coracero gave VVC the lead on an assist from Brianna Rangel.

The Rams (4-3) are back home Tuesday afternoon against Compton.
