From Town & Country

A new dark comedy is coming to Netflix this fall, and with an all-star cast and crew, it's set to be must-watch TV.

The plot of The Politician centers around an ambitious high school student, Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), who's been convinced since age seven that he's destined to be president. "To get elected Student Body President, secure a spot at Harvard, and stay on his singular path to success, Payton will have to outsmart his ruthless classmates without sacrificing his own morality and carefully crafted image," the show's summary reads, setting up some juicy private school drama.

Here's what we know so far about the upcoming show.

Netflix has finally released the first trailer, along with several production photos.

This school election won't go smoothly. The Politician's first preview offers a look at its hyper-ambitious main character, Payton; his enigmatic mother Georgina (Gwyneth Paltrow); and the many classmates Payton will have to bowl over to get his way. Apparently, the show's plot predicted some parts of the college admissions scandal.

The Politician star Ben Platt told Variety that he was shocked to find how well the show's themes lined up with those of Operation Varsity Blues. "It’s like a premonition," Platt said. "Ryan [Murphy] is always a few steps ahead of the curve so it doesn’t surprise me, but when it was happening, it was crazy. He was texting me like, 'Can you believe that this is what our show is about?'"

Platt added that, as an alum of LA's exclusive private school Harvard-Westlake, he was very familiar with that world. "I grew up in L.A. in a very wealthy community, so I certainly saw it happen all the time."

The cast is stacked.

Broadway star Ben Platt is set to play the show's lead, with Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange, Zoey Deutch, Lucy Boynton, Bette Midler, Judith Light and more rounding out the cast.

Murphy is bringing on some of his usual collaborators.

Ian Brennan, a Glee and Scream Queens alum, is writing and executive producing, as is Brad Falchuk, who's collaborated with Murphy since his Nip/Tuck days. Janet Mock, who worked closely with Murphy on Pose, will also directed an episode of The Politician.

There's definitely going to be a second season.

Netflix ordered two seasons of The Politician from the jump. It was the first series greenlit from producer Ryan Murphy after the streaming service struck a five-year, $300 million deal with the celebrated showrunner.

We won't have to wait long.

Netflix has finally revealed that The Politician would debut on September 27—might as well set aside that weekend now.
