Pamela Maldonado breaks down her top stat that matters for Week 1 of 2022 NFL season.
PAM MALDONADO: Happy NFL kickoff, Yahoo Sportsbook. I am Pam Maldonado, and I am bringing you the stats that matter for week one. The matchup, looking at the Cleveland Browns as 1 and 1/2 point underdogs to face the Carolina Panthers.
The stats that matter, the Panthers rushing defense. 26th in opponent rushing percentage last year, which means more run plays were being called against this Carolina defense than passing plays. 18th in rushing touchdowns allowed, giving up 140 rushing yards to Dalvin Cook, 143 rushing yards to Ezekiel Elliott, and another 151 rushing yards to the New England Patriots.
In eight games against teams ranked inside the top half of rushing offenses, this Panthers defense allowed seven total rushing scores. Now why these stats matter, because you have the one, two, and maybe three-punch from the Browns running back unit from Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, and D'Ernest Johnson. Fourth in rushing yards last season. Fourth in rushing touchdown percentage.
So now there are some player props to correlate with these stats, looking to Nick Chubb. Prop number one, over 74 and 1/2 total rushing yards. The Browns' leading running back hit over this total nine times last year, including five straight to open the season.
Prop number two, Chubb anytime touchdown plus 105. He led in rushing scores last year, scoring three in the first two games of the season. He is healthy. It is week one against a susceptible rushing defense. Give me the Nick Chubb props against the Carolina Panthers.
