Betting: Will South Alabama cover at CMU in Week 2?

PAM MALDONADO: It is week two of college football, and I have got my best bet. I'm Pam Maldonado, turning to the Sunbelt Conference and looking to back this underdog this week. The play for me is South Alabama Jaguars plus 5 at Central Michigan. Central Michigan put up 44 points just last week to Oklahoma State, losing 58 to 44. Now you may look at those 44 points and think, wow, this is a team that was in the mix against a Big 12 title contender. The problem is 22 points came in the fourth quarter alone, and the Chippewas were actually down 44 to 15 at the half.
This Central Michigan defense, 121st last year against the pass, gave up over 400 passing yards to quarterback Spencer Sanders and just under 10 yards per pass. Now South Alabama's offense was a pass-only team last season, replacing quarterback Jake Bentley. But Carter Bradley is looking to fill that role pretty nicely. 68% completion, just over 10 yards per pass, and three passing scores last week though, yes, it was against an FCS squad. But against this Central Michigan defense, there is definitely room there for a high-ceiling capability.
Now the strength of this Jaguars team comes in the defense. Top 40 last season, held good offenses in Louisiana, App State, and Coastal Carolina all to 31 points or less, and looking to be just as good this season. Plus, they were top five in takeaways, so I'll definitely be expecting some fumbles and some interceptions. So the play for me is backing an underdog, taking the South Alabama Jaguars plus 5 at Central Michigan.
