Betty Gilpin, Shea Whigham, Darby Camp Join Starz Watergate Series ‘Gaslit’

Betty Gilpin, Shea Whigham, and Darby Camp have all been cast in the upcoming Starz Watergate drama series “Gaslit,” Variety has learned. The trio joins previously announced cast members Julia Roberts, Sean Penn, and Dan Stevens.

The story will center on Martha Mitchell (Roberts). A big personality with an even bigger mouth, Martha is a celebrity Arkansan socialite and wife to President Nixon’s loyal Attorney General, John Mitchell (Penn). Despite her party affiliation, she’s the first person to publicly sound the alarm on Nixon’s involvement in Watergate, causing both the Presidency and her personal life to unravel.

Gilpin will star as Mo Dean, a former stewardess who meets John Dean (Stevens) on a blind date and falls in love with him just as he becomes embroiled in Watergate. Sharp and quick-thinking, Mo learns her new husband is a principal figure in the scandal as they’re both thrust onto a national stage.

Gilpin is a three-time Emmy nominee for her work on the critically-acclaimed Netflix series “GLOW.” Her other credits include “The Hunt,” “Masters of Sex,” and “Nurse Jackie.” She is repped by repped by ICM, Anonymous Content, and Hansen Jacobson.

Whigham will play G. Gordon Liddy, a former FBI agent and chief operative of Nixon’s “Plumbers” unit, who spearheads the Watergate espionage operation as part of Nixon’s 1972 reelection campaign. A zealot and true believer, Liddy follows his own moral code, which drives him to protect the President at all costs.

Whigham’s recent credits include “Perry Mason” at HBO, “Homecoming” at Amazon, and “Waco” at Paramount Network. He is also known for films like “Take Shelter,” “Wristcutters,” and “American Hustle.” He is repped by CAA and Range Media Partners.

Camp will play Marty Mitchell, Martha Mitchell’s daughter, who spent much of her young life living in her mother’s shadow. Accustomed to being dressed up and paraded around parties, Marty has to choose between her parents as their marriage falls apart.

Camp is known for her appearances on shows like “Big Little Lies,” “NOS4A2,” “The Leftovers,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Drop Dead Diva.” She is repped by Paradigm, Morris Yorn, and Imprint PR.

“Gaslit” is based on the award-winning Slate podcast “Slow Burn.” It will be produced by UCP. Robbie Pickering serves as creator and showrunner. Matt Ross will serve as director and executive producer. “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail, via his overall deal with UCP, and Chad Hamilton serve as executive producers under their production banner Esmail Corp. Roberts will executive produce under her banner Red Om Films along with co-executive producers Lisa Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill. The series is written by Pickering, Amelia Gray, Alberto Roldán, Anayat Fakhraie, Uzoamaka Maduka and Sofya Levitsky-Weitz. Karen Bailey, executive vice president of original programming at Starz, will oversee “Gaslit” for the Lionsgate-owned network.
