MIDLAND — Deerfield graduate Dustin Beurer continues to climb the coaching ranks as NCAA Division II Northwood University officially announced him as the next head football coach of the Timberwolves.

Beurer spent the previous four seasons leading Albion College to winning records.

"I am honored to be named the next head football coach at Northwood University," Beurer said in a press release. "I want to thank president Kent MacDonald and (athletic director) Jeff Curtis for providing a clear vision and giving a Division III guy an opportunity. I believe that great people make a great place and I truly felt that throughout the interview process."

Beurer, a 2001 graduate of Deerfield, helped then consolidated Britton-Deerfield to three Tri-County Conference championships in the gridiron while playing for Pete DeWitt.

Beurer became a student assistant with the Britons after his playing days were cut short due to injuries and became recruiting coordinator, offensive line coach and became the offensive coordinator before replacing Craig Rundle after his 22-year run as head coach in 2019.

He spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at FCS Morehead State in between stints with the Britons while earning his master's degree.

In his four seasons as head coach at Albion, the Britons were 29-5 and 18-4 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Albion won two MIAA titles in 2020 and 2021 with a NCAA Division III tournament appearance in 2021 (no tournament in 2020 due to COVID-19).

"This opportunity had to be a special place for me to leave my alma mater and a place I have called home for 20 years of my adult life" Beurer said in the release. "It was clear to me after meeting and speaking with the alumni and current players that they are all hungry to win. Our staff and players will work tirelessly to have a positive impact on campus, in the community, and on the field of competition. My family and I are excited to join the Midland community and I am ready to bring unmatched energy and enthusiasm in everything we do."

Beurer's offenses while head coach averaged 38.47 points per game.

He takes over a Northwood program that went 3-8 last season and hasn't had a winning season since 2017. The Timberwolves have won only nine games since the 2017 season.

"We are thrilled to add Dusty to our athletic family,” Curtis said in the release. “We were fortunate to have a number of outstanding candidates for this position, but Dusty emerged as the best person to take program to new heights. His passion and energy for football has led to a highly successful run as a head coach. He will do a tremendous job leading our program.”
