Beyoncé bringing ‘show-stopping fashion moments’ to Kansas City. Here are 8 of the best

Beyoncé reportedly had 42 custom pairs of Jimmy Choo shoes with her during her Renaissance World Tour, a bit of trivia that could not have surprised fans who expect her shows to be as much about the fashion as the music.

She wraps up the tour Sunday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium with high praise from fashion critics who have been left breathless by her vast wardrobe of custom looks.

“Whether it’s a rhinestone encrusted Loewe catsuit, a Tiffany-blue minidress (made in conjunction with Giles Deacon), or a sparkly Miu Miu tank and shorts, every stop is filled with show-stopping fashion moments,” declared 10, a London-based fashion magazine.

It all began with a crystal-embroidered bodysuit and matching boots by Alexander McQueen she wore while singing “Dangerously in Love” in Stockholm on May 10, the kickoff of her highest-grossing tour yet.

Since then she has been embellished to within an inch of her life by fashion’s elite — Gucci, Fendi, Balmain, Ferragamo, Valentino, Alexander McQueen, Loewe and Vera Wang, to name just a handful.

Oh, and all that Tiffany & Co. jewelry.

“There is no singular collaboration here, no lucky unique label for the entire tour,” wrote Vogue. “Instead, there’s an ever growing list of designers, one that quite literally expands with every tour date.”

The costumes took their cue from the “Renaissance” album, following a glittery, theatrical disco and space-age theme, seen in outfits like the custom Courrèges silver bodysuit she wore while singing “I’m That Girl” and “Alien Superstar.”

Who knows how many sequins and Swarovski crystals have given up their lives for all those corsets and catsuits.

She is a true friend to fashion who has worn at least one designer from each country and city she has visited, and on Juneteenth performed in custom outfits by Black designers.

Who will she wear in Kansas City?

Here is a look back at just eight memorable looks.

1. ‘Handsy’ bodysuit by Loewe

The Spanish fashion house created several bespoke costumes inspired by sculptural forms, body illusion and trompe l’oeil, handcrafted by artisans in Paris and Barcelona.

The outfits blended “futuristic concepts with theatrical, disco-era aesthetics; robots and machines meet high shine crystals, latex and 3D printed leather pieces,” the company said.

“One of the most fun things about watching Beyoncé’s tour play out across the globe, and almost as exciting as seeing what she herself wears on stage, has been spotting the outfits her army of fans have been slipping into — and more particularly, their DIY iterations of this very Loewe ensemble,” notes Dazed, a British lifestyle magazine.

2. Vintage bee headpiece by Mugler

As an homage to the fans of her Beyhive, Beyoncé wore a bee costume by Mugler, one of her go-to labels, when she sang “America Has a Problem” and “Pure/Honey.” The look quickly became one of the most popular with fans, again inspiring DIY versions.

But the black-and-yellow bodysuit, with a futuristic-looking, bug-eyed helmet, proved problematic at the May 30 concert in London when she had trouble pulling it off her head. (Some people think it got caught on her long faux eyelashes.)

She dropped it on the stage and by many accounts looked shocked when she saw an antennae had broken off.

3. Silver cape by Alexander McQueen

Fashion critics raved over this sparkling bodysuit with a matching floor-length cape “with silver shard sequin embroidery” she wore at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (That’s where the Kansas City Chiefs will play the New York Jets Sunday night, as Beyoncé takes over Arrowhead.) The atelier posted photos online of the meticulous, intricate handwork required to sew on thousands of sequins and faceted beads.

She wore several McQueen costumes on the tour, including a tulle catsuit in Chicago decorated with a sequin horse, an homage to the “Renaissance” album cover.

“That cape is literally art,” gushed one fan on the McQueen Instagram account. “I hope there’s a museum set up with all her performance outfits one day. Bc I mean, I would definitely go to that! Play Beyoncé all through the museum?! Sounds amazing to me.”

4. Red minidress with cape by Carolina Herrera

She left scorched earth behind her in this crimson, custom stretch crepe minidress with a plunging neckline by the brand’s creative director Wes Gordon. It was a monochromatic marvel — the silk taffeta hood, gloves, tights, Jimmy Choo pumps with diamond-studded straps were all red.

She also wore custom Tiffany diamond earrings that spelled out “Renaissance.”

Harpers Bazaar dubbed it a “sophisticated red-hot ensemble.”

The magazine noted that Bey had worn another monochromatic look custom-made by Ivy Park, her clothing line with Adidas.

“The red-hot look follows her hot-pink Barbiecore number … consisted of a sequined halter gown featuring two hip-grazing leg slits, as well as a halter neckline with a cutout at the bust,” the magazine wrote.

5. Color-changing dress by Anrealage

High-tech merged with high fashion in a color-changing white, bell-sleeved coat she wore on stage during the U.S. leg of the tour. When it was exposed to UV lights, triangle shapes on the robe changed into various colors that looked like stained-glass.

The Japanese fashion brand Anrealage and Tokyo designer Kunihiko Morinaga, “inducted their light-dependent polychromic technology into the coat and ensured no one could escape its iridescent charm,” wrote one Hong Kong luxury magazine.

6. Perfume bottle dress by Mary Katrantzou

Yes, this costume was intended to look like a perfume bottle.

It was a recreation of the Greek designer’s iconic trompe l’oeil perfume bottle dress from her fall 2009 ready-to-wear collection. Beyoncé wore the surrealistic outfit with leather thigh-high boots, embellished opera gloves and a custom bottle top headpiece, a collaboration with British milliner Stephen Jones.

7. Old Hollywood glamour by Balmain

In her hometown of Houston, she debuted a polka-dot dress by the French luxury fashion house that gave strong Audrey Hepburn vibes.

Custom-designed by creative director Olivier Rousteing, the dress had pearl straps and a slit on the front that showed much of her left thigh. She wore a multi-layered necklace of oversized pearls and a pair of white opera gloves that amped up the sophistication.

8. Her birthday suit. Versace

When Beyoncé performed on her birthday in Inglewood, California, on Sept. 4, in front of a crowd that included family and celebrity friends, one of her most eye-catching costumes was a blue-and-gold chain mail, micro-minidress created for her by Donatella Versace.

The singer wore it with a matching wide-brimmed hat and over-the-knee boots in the same print — Versace head-to-toe.

“When Beyoncé called me to design a look for her Renaissance World Tour, I knew I had to use our iconic elements: Versace metal mesh and the Barocco print for THE Queen,” Versace wrote on Instagram. “Happy Birthday, @beyonce!”
