Beyoncé Made a Powerful Statement About the ‘Senseless Killing’ of George Floyd

On Friday, Beyoncé lent her voice to the chorus of people calling for justice for George Floyd.

The singer took to Instagram to share her message with the masses on what she calls the "senseless killing" of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died at the hands of the police while being detained.

Since his death on May 25, multiple videos have emerged of Floyd's arrest in Minneapolis. Over the course of nearly nine minutes, Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on Floyd's neck as the 46-year-old truck driver pleaded with the officer to get up, stating "I can't breathe" over and over again. Chauvin did not remove his knee from Floyd's neck until paramedics arrived, despite Floyd's plea for mercy. Chauvin has since been arrested and charged with third-degree murder; however, the three other former officers involved have yet to be charged.

In an Instagram video shared on May 29, Beyoncé opens up about her feelings of pain and hopelessness. "We need Justice for George Floyd," she begins. "We all witnessed his murder in broad daylight. We're broken and we're disgusted. We cannot normalize this pain. I'm not only speaking to people of color. If you're white, black, brown, or anything in between, I'm sure you feel hopeless by the racism going on in America right now." She adds, "No more senseless killing of human beings."

The singer then calls for people to "no longer look away" from the injustices happening in our nation. "George is all of our family in humanity. He's our family because he's a fellow American. There have been too many times that we've seen these violent killings with no consequences," she says. "Yes, someone has been charged, but justice is far from being achieved."

"Sign the petition and continue to pray for peace and compassion and healing for our country," Beyoncé concludes, with a call to action for all of her 147 million followers. "Thank you so much."

In her bio, the singer links to her website, which lists four petition pages: Change.org, Color of Change, We Can't Breathe, and the NAACP, for her followers to choose from. She added to the page, "Rest in power, George Floyd."
