Coupled with a flurry of colorful photos taken throughout the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter got vulnerable in a social media-based interview with Elle.

The actress, fashion mogul, and pop icon opened up about how her experience with miscarriages shaped her approach to motherhood and self-care as a mother.

"I learned that all pain and loss is in fact a gift," Knowles-Carter said. "Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else."

In addition to changing the way she approached caring for herself, Knowles-Carter told Elle that going through her miscarriages and subsequently having her now-7-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, had a deep impact on her career and life purpose.

"I died and was reborn in my relationship, and the quest for self became even stronger. It's difficult for me to go backwards," Knowles-Carter said. "Being 'number one' was no longer my priority. My true win is creating art and a legacy that will live far beyond me. That's fulfilling."

Though Knowles-Carter has been open about motherhood in her art, the artist still likes to maintain privacy in her personal life. Of all the questions the artist gets asked, she told Elle she hates being asked if she's pregnant the most.

"Get off my ovaries!" she said.

Knowles-Carter said she used her art as a form of therapy to cope with miscarriages in the past

Knowles-Carter has discussed her miscarriages in the past. In her 2013 documentary "Life Is But a Dream, she shared that she miscarried before having Blue Ivy.

The artist said that a week after hearing her child's heartbeat for the first time, she suffered complications in the early stages of pregnancy, resulting in a miscarriage. Turning to art to help cope with the grief, she went on to pen what she said was the saddest song she'd ever written, "Heartbeat."

"And it was actually the first song I wrote for my album. And it was the best form of therapy for me, because it was the saddest thing I've ever been through," she said in her documentary. That song never made it onto an album.

Beyonce is now the mother of three children: Blue Ivy, and her two-year-old twin boys, Sir and Rumi.
